Abstract: More than 3 million units of Air conditioners are being sold every year in India and sales are expected to grow further. The annual electricity consumption by air conditioners is rapidly increasing in India. The total potential energy savings from room AC efficiency improvement in India using the best available technology will reach over 118 TWhr by 2030. Out of the total power consumed by the ACs, around 65% is being consumed by the compressor alone. The compressor pumps the liquid from the evaporator into a condenser and expansion valve, and then back to the evaporator using a motor. In most commercially available ACs, this motor turns off when the required temperature is reached and turns back on as the temperature rises. This happens around 5-6 times every hour. As the starting current of an induction motor is very high, it draws a large amount of power from the supply. Also, the motor always runs at rated speed, which consumes more power than is actually required for effective cooling. The compressor efficiency can be improved by maintaining continuous operation at low speeds. This is achieved by varying the speed of the induction motor (in the compressor) based on the temperature difference between the set temperature and outdoor temperature. The energy savings were found to be 13.75% by employing this system.

Abstract: Incineration is waste destruction in a furnace by controlled burning at high temperatures. Waste incinerators are commonly viewed as harmful to the environment because of the pollutants they inevitably emit. Air filtering is one viable way to minimize the harmful gases produced by incineration. Electrostatic high voltage air filter with water filtration is a highly efficient filtration device that is extremely effective oxidant, lethal to all bacteria and viruses. An electrostatic high voltage air filter is suitable in treating the smoke from the incinerator since it can effectively reduce the pollutants present in the smoke. The water filtration is a viable addition in the filtering system since it reduces the smoke coming from the incinerator. The electrostatic high voltage air filter is placed before the water filtration since the former is sensitive in humid air. The incinerator and the filtering system are separated to protect the filtering components from high temperature coming from the incinerator. MQ135 air quality sensor is used to measure the overall quality of air coming out of the exhaust after the filtering system. Industrial-grade suction fans are used to force the smoke from the incinerator to the filtering system. MCU is used to centralize the operation and control of the incineration and filtration. An LCD is used to monitor the current process and display the real-time data indicated by air quality sensor. A keypad is used to provide selection in the process of incineration and filtration. Three trials in each type of non-recyclable garbage (plastics, papers, dry leaves, and assorted) were conducted to determine the average result in four different conditions (both filters are off, filters are on, only electrostatic filter is on, and only water filtration is on). The evaluation of the performance of the filtering system was observed and therefore concluded that it is capable to reduce the pollutants emitted by the incinerator significantly.

Abstract: Automatic video summarization is absolutely necessary for fast browsing speed and effective management of large video libraries. Recent advancement in the technology have seen tremendous increase in the usage of multimedia information. Among all these multimedia information Video is most challenging one as it combines all other forms of multimedia information. As we know there is exponential increase of web videos and it’s become time-consuming to get a query result from the huge data. So it requires efficient and effective video management system. If we search for particular video in any search engine for ex. Google server it will give lakhs of results within few seconds which are may not be of our interest. Extracting a small number of keyframes that can compact the whole content of video is very important for efficient browsing and retrieval system. The number of key frames required to abstract a shot will depend on visual content complexity within the shot.

Abstract: With the rapid and increasing advancements in field of semiconductor technology the brushless DC motors are extensively used in the computer peripherals, videos recorders, spindle drives, aerospace industry, military equipments, automated industry, and other household equipments, since practically they need no maintenance, have long life, low inertia and friction. Because of low inertia and friction they can be used in very high speed applications. This paper deals with, a position sensorless brushless direct current (BLDC) drive operation is described. Detection of back EMF zero crossing from line voltage difference is employed here for the sensorless drive operation. The line voltage difference gives an amplified version of back EMF which makes the sensorless operation possible. Low pass filters are used for eliminating the spikes in the wave form and to provide the necessary delay required for the proper commutation of switches. Neutral potential is not needed for obtaining the commutation pulses. Sample and hold circuit is also not needed since the use of filter eliminates the spikes. Proposed sensorless drive is simulated using MATLAB/ SIMULINK. The PMBLDC motors are controlled electronically and for the proper commutation of current, rotor position information is required, on the other hand the problems of the cost temperature sensitivity and reliability of position sensors have motivated the research in the area of sensor less PMBLDC motor drives.

Abstract: Wireless meter reading put more control into the hands of both utilities and consumer by giving them more detailed information about power consumption. In the work presented here, a technique has been developed to read electricity meter reading from a remote server automatically using the existing GSM networks for cellular phones. This technique can be applied for gas or water meters as well as. The meter send the meter readings like kilo-watt-hour (kWh), voltage, current, bill, etc. by SMS to a central server. The central server then stores the information in database for analysis and sends the bill to the customer mobile phone. The SMS based data collection cab be done very quickly and efficiently. Data can be collected after any desired time interval such as hourly, daily, weekly or monthly bases. Remote meter can be used in residential apartment and especially in industrial consumers where bulk energy consumed.

Abstract: This paper presents design of the circuit, using this circuit we can communicate with our neighbors wirelessly. Instead of RF signals, light from a laser torch is used as the carrier in the circuit. The laser torch can transmit light up to a distance of about 500 meters when IR sensor is accurately oriented towards the laser beam from the torch. If there is any obstacle in the path of the laser beam, no sound will be there from the receiver. The transmitter circuit consists of a condenser microphone transistor amplifier BC548 followed by an op-amp stage built around µA741. The value of gain of op-amp can be varied with the help of 1-mega-ohm pot meter VR1.The AF output from IC1 is coupled to the base of transistor BD139 (T2), which modulates the laser beam. The power supply is firstly stepped down through a step down transformer which is further rectified through a rectifier and 9V power supply is given to the transmitter circuit. However, the 3-volt laser torch is directly connected to the circuit with the emitter of BD139. The receiver circuit uses an IR sensor that is followed by a two-stage transistor pre-amplifier and LM386 audio Power amplifier. The receiver does not require any complicated alignment. Just keep the IR sensor oriented towards transmitter’s laser point and adjust the volume for a clear sound. While using circuit keep the IR sensor away from AC light sources such as bulbs. The reflected sunlight, however, does not cause any problem. But the sensor should not directly face the sun.

Abstract: Android is open source software, manufacturers can modify the operating system to suit their respective needs and phones. This becomes a cheap and feasible alternative for the manufacturer, as opposed to developing an operating system in-house or hiring a software company to do it. The Android platform includes support for the Bluetooth network stack, which allows a device to wirelessly exchange data with other Bluetooth devices. The application framework provides access to the Bluetooth functionality through the Android Bluetooth .Here the proposed system is designed to controlling the speed of induction motor using android application where the remotely controlling speed of induction motor is achieved. Android mobile act as a transmitter and the received by Bluetooth receiver interfaced to AVR microcontroller of 8051 family. AVR is an advanced version of 8051 microcontroller. Each time data is sent by android application as per code written is executed by AVR to deliver supply signal to triac through optical isolation. Hence the power to load connected in series with triac is controlled based on received signal and speed control of induction motor is achieved.
