Abstract: Tomato leaf curl and Alternaria leaf blight are the most serious diseases of the tomato crop in Sudan. The present study was conducted in the winter season, to evaluate the effect of covering the tomato seedlings with mosquito nets in the nursery and frequently spraying with confidor insecticide. After six weeks the seedlings were transplanted into three farmers fields in three locations north of Khartoum; namely Saggai, Karary and Shambat, to serve as demonstration plots for the tomato growers in each locality. The results revealed significant decrease in the leaf curl disease incidence by 47.3%, 30.7% and 29.3% at Saggai, Karary and Shambat locations, respectively. The results of field spraying with Amstar Top fungicide in the farmer's fields decrease the incidence of early blight by 10.3%, 15.0% and 13.8% at Karary, Saggai and Shambat, respectively. The combined effects of covering the tomato seedlings in the nursery and fungicide spraying in the field resulted in significant increase in tomato yield at Karary and Saggai by 25.5% and 39.2%, respectively, but the increase in yield at Shambat was not significant due to the abnormal inoculum pressure on the plot. The farmers at Karary and Saggai have already adopted the present disease control techniques.

Abstract: Bacteria produce lipases efficiently, having a wide range of applications in different industries. In the present study, lipase producing bacteria were isolated from different oil contaminated soil samples collected from Karnataka, India. Lipase producing bacteria were initially screened on tributyrate agar media and confirmed on Rhodamine B olive oil agar media. Among 35 lipase producing bacterial isolates, the potential isolate RV22 was subjected to biochemical characterization. And the bacterial strain RV22 identified as Serratia sp.

Abstract: In the present study, primary and secondary metabolites were estimated quantitatively from Mnium cuspidatum – a moss commonly found in Himalayan region. M. cuspidatum is used as traditional medicine to cure burns and inflammation. GC-MS and FTIR analyses revealed the presence of bioactive compounds with medicinal properties in the studied moss indicating its potential to be used as an herbal alternative for various diseases.

Abstract: A faunistic survey of mites was conducted during the period March 2014 to February 2017 from warehouses of twelve districts of Punjab. Wheat dust and rice dust samples were collected from each site seasonally, i.e. Summer (CCL I), Rainy (CCL II) and Winter (CCL III).  Mite survey revealed the occurrence of 27 mite species belonging to 3 orders, 15 families. A total of 28701 mite specimens were extracted from the infested samples. The most abundant and most prevalent mite in both types of samples was: Tyrophagus putrscentiae (Schrank, 1781). A total of 315 samples (72.92 %) out of the 432 total collected samples were positive for T.  putrscentiae specimens. Out of 28701 mites obtained from infested samples, 4078 (14.21%) specimens were of T. putrscentiae.

Abstract: Chromolaena Odorata and other associated species of Annona Squamosa have been reported be nematicidal. This research was intended at providing more information on the nematicidal activity of Chromolaena odorata and exposure the nematicidal action of Annona squamosa. Ten grams each of the powders were drenched in cold 100 ml of methanol for one week to produce 100,000 mg/kg stock solution, filtered and concentrated. One ml of nematode suspension that contained 60 eggs of M. incognita extracted with sodium hypochlorite, one ml of nematode suspension that contained 60 one week old second-stage juveniles dispensed into glass blocks that contained one ml of the extracts. Percentage inhibition and juvenile mortality were estimated. Dry powders were analyzed for Infrared and phytochemicals. Water extracts inhibited egg-hatch of Meloidogyne incognita (25-100%) and killed the juveniles (2.3-100%). Water extracts, 20,000 mg/kg, 30,000 mg/kg as from fourth day had 100% mortality of the juveniles. The IR revealed alcohols, amines, unsaturated/aromatic compounds and phenols. The phytochemicals identified were saponins, tannins, phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones and cardenolides. Saponins were of the highest amounts followed by tannins and phenols. These botanicals were inhibitors of egg-hatch, lethal to juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita and might be attributed to the phytochemicals.

Abstract: Sturnus pagodarum is locally abundant in Marathwada region and commonly known as Brahminy Myna. It is seasonal breeder, partial local migratory bird species, therefore the less number was observed in November to February months in the year. There is almost negligible information about nesting, clutch size, incubation period, hatchlings, nestlings, fledging period of this species. The present study, carried out during March 2015 to February 2017 in the suburban habitat of Vaijapur, near Aurangabad (MS), India. A total of 36 nests were recorded from the area and observed for two years. Most of these birds reoccupy the nest on successive seasons and add more material or reconstruct the nest at same spot or site.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to examine the cytotoxic effect of Barleria longiflora L.f stem extract on cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines. HeLa cells were cultured in EMEM medium and incubated with different concentrations (12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 200 µg/ml) of ethanol extract of Barleria longiflora L.f. The method used for this research to determine cell viability was an 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Barleria longiflora decreased cell viability in malignant cells in a concentration dependent manner. The IC₅₀ value of Barleria longiflora extract was found to be 184.3 µg/ml. These data showed ethanolic extract of Barleria longiflora reduces the viability of cervical cell lines and may have potential as anti-cancer compounds.

Abstract: The present study was designated to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of ethanolic extract of Barleria longiflora L.f. The antimicrobial activities of the extract against 6 strains belong to bacterial and fungi species were tested by using Disc diffusion method. The results showed that ethanolic extract of Barleria longiflora L.f had moderately significant antibacterial and significant antifungal activity. It inhibited the growth of both bacterial and fungal species dose dependently. The inhibition of growth was highest at 100mg/ml as compared to the controls. Ethanolic extract showed stronger antimicrobial activity against the fungi than that of the bacteria’s. Thus we can conclude that Barleria longiflora L.f was a potent antimicrobial agent which can be tried as a novel anti-fungal agent.

Abstract: Liver and kidneys are the important organs for metabolism, detoxification, homeostasis and excretion in most of the higher animals, including man. Toxic substances cause histopathological changes in both of these major tissues. Because the kidney get easily exposed to higher concentrations of fluoride than any other soft tissues ,excess  fluoride exposure contributes to kidney damage, thus damaged kidneys increase the retention of fluoride, causing in turn further damage to the kidney, bone, and other organs. In animals, kidney damage has been reported at levels as low as 1 ppm if the animals consume fluoridated water for long periods of time. In the present investigation status of various membrane bound enzymes and other biochemicals in liver and kidney were studied in both control and experimental rats, which were given NaF in drinking water for 180 days. Acid phosphatase, LDH, and SDH were depleted significantly in liver after 180 days of fluoride feeding through drinking water. Alkaline phosphatase (P< 0.01), G-6-PD (P < 0.01) and ATPase (P< 0.01) were elevated significantly.  GOT and GPT in liver were also increased significantly except GPT which was significant (P< 0.1) only in male rats .Significant (P< 0.1) decrease in liver proteins and elevated glycogen content were noted in all the experimental rats after 180 days of exposure to fluoride in drinking water. In kidney of experimental rats, alkaline phosphatase, GOT, GPT and ATPase were significantly elevated after chronic treatment of fluoride through drinking water. However, the enzymes acid phosphatase, LDH and SDH were significantly (P< 0.01) depleted. Total protein was found to be depleted significantly (60.07%) in male rats and 55.72% in female rats.

Abstract: The current study presents investigations on the characteristic of protein in different accessions of Urginea indica/ Drimia indica belonging to family Hyacinthaceae is a large polytypic genus of bulbous herbs. Different accessions of Urginea indica were collected from different regions of India like Ramanagar, Rangantitu, Gopalaswamibetta, sitampoondi, kerala and used for study. We have conducted our study using bulb part of the plant. Bradford method was used for estimation of protein. Highest protein was found in Rangantitu accession of Urginea indica around 0.88µg/ml. In Gopalaswamibetta accession the protein concentration was found to be 0.83µg/ml, Sitampoondi accession 0.75µg/ml, Ramanagar it was 0.71µg/ml and lowest protein concentration was seen in Kerala accession nearly 0.56 µg/ml. Native 12% poly acrylamide gel electrophoresis was carried out for characterization of protein in different accessions of Urginea indica. To see the diversification among species, three species of Urginea; Urginea indica, Urgnea wightii and Urginea polyphylla were taken into consideration for 12% native and SDS-PAGE.

Abstract: To find out the effect of isolated gut probiotics on the total growth parameters of freshwater fish fingerlings Labeo rohita. The isolated gut probiotic Bacillus subtilis (SUB3845847 SeqJP2 MH128358) on Length, Weight, Weight gain percentage and Specific growth rate (SGR) of freshwater fish Labeo rohita for the period of 60 days.  The two tubs such as Control tub (fed without probiotics) and Experimental tub (feed fed with Bacillus subtilis) were maintained and 30 fingerlings were introduced into each tub and continuous aeration was given. Each treatment had triplicates. The feed was given twice a day of 6 am and 6 pm regularly at the rate of 3% body weight and water changed every day with the water pump. At the end of the evening 15 days, fish Weight and Length were measured up to 60 days. Results indicate that Weight and Length were significantly increased in the experimental tub than the control tub. Isolated gut probiotic diet improved gastrointestinal activity and stimulate the better growth parameters of freshwater fish Labeo rohita.

Abstract: Demographic ageing is a global phenomenon. The world's population is ageing and by 2025, the world's population is expected to include more than 830 million people at an age of 65. Depression is one of the leading causes of disease burden globally and in low- and middle-income countries. Globally, depression is ranked as the single largest contributor to non-fatal health loss, accounting for 7.5% of global years lived with disability and 2.0% of global disability adjusted life years in 2015. Reminiscence therapy is a method of using the memory to protect mental health and improve the quality of life.  Thus study was conducted to assess and compare the pre test and post test depression among geriatric population The research approach adopted for the study was Experimental approach with  pre -experimental one group pretest –post test design. The convenient sampling technique was used to select the old age home and purposive sampling technique was adopted for selecting the study subjects. The sample for the present study was 150 study subjects.

The tool used for data collection was Standardized Geriatric Depression Scale(GDS). Results have shown that reminiscence therapy was effective in decreasing the level of depression among research participants significantly.  It is concluded that reminiscence is potentially effective methods for the enhancement of psychological well-being in older adults.

Abstract: Marine shrimp farmers generally believe that bottom soil quality in ponds deteriorates over time because of sediment accumulation, declining pH, and increasing organic matter concentration. Pond bottom soil management has received much attention in marine shrimp culture. Totally 9 different soil samples were collected from shrimp culture farm at Nagapattinam district, Tamilnadu and their physico-chemical properties were analyzed. Our research goal was to determine the prevalence, properties, persistence, and types of bacteria in shrimp aquaculture. In the present investigation the Lactobacillus sp. 2.33 x 10^-6 - 2.88 x 10^-6 CFU/ml occupied dominant role.

Abstract: An attempt was made to investigate the possible Sulphur source in Termite-Termitomyces mutualistic system using SEM-EDX and ICP-AES and assess its role for production of healthy Termitomyces holomorph. Our study successfully indicated the Termitomyces substratum called fungus comb is the rich source of Sulphur for production of Sulphur rich mushroom fruitbodies.
