Abstract: Essential oils isolated from Artemisia maritima L. and Zanthoxylum armatum DC. were analyzed by mass spectroscopy (MS) and their main constituents were identified. Fumigant activity, repellent activity, progeny deterrency and antifeedant activity of essential oils and two constituents viz., alpha pinene and linalool were examined against the major stored product insect pest, Plodia interpunctella (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). 100% mortality was achieved by alpha pinene, linalool, A. maritima and Z. armatum oils at all concentrations within 120 hrs against P. interpunctella. Alpha pinene showed the highest repellent activity of 80.18±1.9, 88.36±1.4, 93.15±4.1% after 1, 3 and 5 hrs respectively followed by linalool and Z. armatum and showed remarkable activity at 6 µl/cm2 against P. interpunctella with 76.24±1.1 and 66.42±2.8% repellence after 3 hrs followed by 80.46±1.8 and 72.26±1.4% after an interval of 5 hrs. In progeny deterrence tests alpha pinene and linalool were more potent than others producing 10.25±1.2 and 13.45±2.2 F1 progeny of P. interpunctella with 74.66 and 66.74% deterrent activity even at a lowest concentration of 10 µl/ml, whereas 40.45±4.8 adults emerged successfully in control. Similarly highest antifeedant activity was revealed for alpha pinene followed by linalool while both the essential oils showed less FDI against the given pest. Responses varied with respect to doses of compounds and exposure time. Further, alpha pinene showed higher toxicity than linalool and it may be attributed to its chemical structure.

Abstract: Presence of lead and cadmium in sorrel have been reported in other parts of the world. This study sought to explore presence as applicable to local grown and consumption of traditional red variety as samples were grown in mined bauxite rich soils reported to have these cumulative toxins. Seeds had higher concentrations of cadmium; leaves had higher concentrations of lead. All samples had trace amounts of lead and cadmium. While the heavy metals reported in earlier studies (iron, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and copper) could enhance human health, the potential toxicological effect of lead and cadmium present in known consumable portions of plant recommend moderate consumptions, modern methods to grow void of these toxins, or possible isolation of nutraceutic compounds to gain maximum health benefits. Cyanidin and delphinidin for example were reported to inhibit epidermal growth factor receptor in cancer cells, both of which were reported present in sorrel calyxes. Sorrel calyxes and leaves extracts were reported effective against cancers. The presence of these anthocyanins and their reported effect on cancerous cells underscores the plants nutraceutic potentials, whilst presence of lead and cadmium urge caution.

Abstract: Biosurfactant-producing bacteria were isolated from transformer oil-contaminated soil. The strain was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa PU1 based on its molecular characterization by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The extraction of biosurfactant was done by acid precipitation method using 2 N hydrochloric acid and further purified by silica-gel column chromatography. The highest rhamnolipid biosurfactant production (8.92 ± 0.08 g/L) was obtained using molasses (6%, w/v) and ammonium nitrate (5%, w/v). The purified biosurfactant showed a reduction in surface tension of water from 70.23 mN/m to 29.77 mN/m at a concentration of 30 mg/L. The degradation of various oils by P. aeruginosa PU1 through gravimetric method showed maximum degradation of used transformer oil (95.55 ± 2.70%) followed by diesel oil (94.36 ± 1.86%), kerosene (76.17 ± 1.62%) and petroleum oil (66.03 ± 2.91%) in 10 days of the incubation period. The functional groups were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR). The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis showed six different rhamnolipid congeners with pseudomolecular ions (m/z) of 305, 361, 451, 505, 532, and 621. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and the thermal analysis showed crystalline nature and thermal stability of the biosurfactant. The stability study of the biosurfactant reveals that the emulsifying activity was much stable at various ranges of temperature (4–120 ^○C), pH (2–12), and NaCl concentration (2–10%, w/v) even on the 7^th day. The purified biosurfactant PU1 was found to be effective in oil recovery and showed 68.53 ± 3.07% of oil recovery in the sand pack column under saline condition, which was higher than anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The physico-chemical properties and the stability studies of the biosurfactant suggested that it has enormous potential in oil recovery in the soil contaminated with the oils.

Abstract: Zinc is an essential micronutrient for spermatogenesis and normal sperm function. There have been conflicting reports on the relation of seminal zinc on various seminal parameters. This study aimed to evaluate zinc levels in seminal plasma of infertile men and its relation to infertility.

Objective:  To find out relation of zinc concentration in seminal plasma with  sperm morphology  in infertile subjects having  normozoospermia, oligozoospermia  and  azoospermia.

Design: Cross sectional study

Setting: This study is carried out in the reproductive biology unit in department of Physiology &Central Research Lab, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Sawangi Wardha (MS) from June 2009 to Dec 2011.

Subjects and method: Study involved detail history taking; clinical examination followed by detailed semen analysis as per the WHO criteria.  The seminal plasma was then classified in to six  groups patients having  normozoospermia (40),  oligozoospermia (16) ,ashanospermia withnormal count (9),oligoasthenospermia (20),teratozoospermia(10) and azoospermia (10). They were used for zinc determination by zinc kit (supplied by Coral pharmaceuticals) using colorimeter. The morphology of the sperm is also evaluated. With WHO criteria, sample is normal if 30 % or more of the observed sperm have normal morphology.Slides for morphological smear were prepared and smear were fixed and stained with papanicolau stain, the procedure was done according to WHO manual.

Results: Zinc levels were lower among azoospermic & oligospermic as compared to   normozoospermic patients. Seminal plasma zinc showed a positive correlation with normal spermatozoa morphology.

Conclusion: Zinc level in seminal plasma and its relationship to seminal parameters might give useful information regarding male reproductive dysfunction. It seems that the estimation of seminal plasma zinc may help in investigation and treatment of infertile subjects.

Abstract: To investigate the changes in endothelial cell count [ECC] at 15 days and 2 month in eyes undergoing femtosecond  laser assisted cataract surgery [FLACS]. METHODS:-Hundred [100] patients had one eye operated by femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery [FLACS] [catalase precision laser system]. Endothelial count, hexagonality, central thickness was measured by using non-contact specular microscopy and pachymetry. preoperatively, 15 days and 2 months postoperatively. 

Results: Preoperatively endothelial cell count was 2500 or less in 35 eyes [35%],2501to 3000 in 52 eyes [52%] ,3001to 3500 in 10 eyes  [10%],3501 to 4000 in 3 eyes [3%].15days post operatively endothelial cell count was 2000 or less in 5 eyes [5%],2001 to 2500 in 60 eyes [60%],2501 to 3000 in 34 eyes [34%], 3001 to 3500 in 1 eye [1%].2 month operatively endothelial cell count was 2000 or less in 5 eyes [5%], 2001 to 2500 in 61 eyes [61%],2501 to 3000 in 34 eyes [34%].

Conclusion: Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery [FLACS] appears to be as safe for corneal endothelial cells postoperatively.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcome and correction of pre-existing corneal astigmatism after Toric IOL implantation in patients undergoing cataract surgery ^[4].

Design: Retrospective case study ^[22]

Material And Method: In this retrospective study, we included 150 eyes of 150 patients; with cataract and regular corneal astigmatism between  1.50 to 3.50 D. Phacoemulsification was performed with Toric IOL implantation through 2.8mm clear corneal temporal incision ^[4].

Studied parameters before and after surgery included uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) & residual refractive astigmatism ^[6].

Results: Preoperatively UCVA was 20/200 or less in 80 eyes (53.33%), 20/125 to 20/80 in 50 eyes (33.33%), 20/63 to 20/40 in 20 eyes (13.33%). Postoperatively UCVA was 20/80 in 12 eyes (8.00%), 20/63 to 20/40 in 103 eyes (68.66%), 20/32 to 20/25 in 35 eyes (23.33%). All eyes had 20/20 BCVA (100%). Preoperatively, 30 eyes have  -1.50 to -1.75D. Astigmatism (20%), 50 eyes had  -2.00 to -2.50D. Astigmatism (33.33%), 70 eyes had -3.00 to -3.50D. Astigmatism (46.66%). Postoperatively, 90 eyes had  -0. 50D. Astigmatism (60%), 40 eyes had  -0. 75D. Astigmatism (26.66%) and 20 eyes had  -1. 00D. Astigmatism (13.33%) ^[8].

Conclusion: Toric IOL’s allow correction of astigmatism without compromising the integrity of the cornea. They provide predictable results and can reduce healing times as there is less surgical impact on the cornea. Toric IOL implantation is an effective and safe surgical option to manage pre-existing corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery ^[4].

Abstract: The role of radiation biology has acquired greater relevance and significance in addressing the health issues. Radiation is often used to treat malignant tumours, or in combination with surgery. Despite the advantage of radiotherapy and improvements in techniques, many patients experience moderate to severe side effects. Adhatoda vasica, an evergreen, gregarious, stiff and perennial shrub of family Acanthaceae has been used as herbal medicine in treating a wide variety of diseases in India. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anti-ulcer effect of Adhatoda vasica extract on gamma –radiation induced gastric lesions in mice. Mice  showing no signs of morbidity were divided into  four groups (i) control (ii) Adhatoda extract treated mice (900mg/kg body weight) (iii) Irradiated mice (5gy) (iv) Adhatoda extract treated and irradiated mice. Adhatoda extract was administered orally to the animals (900mg/kg body weight) for a period of 30 days. After 10 days of extract administration mice were irradiated with 5Gy γ-rays.  Mice were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and stomach was excised on 10, 20 and 30 days. Stomach was opened along the greater curvature. It was rinsed with water to remove gastric contents and blood clots. Stomach was then examined by a 10×magnifier lens for the assessment of ulcers. Control group and Adhatoda extract treated mice stomach revealed normal and healthy gastric architecture. Irradiated group of mice showed multiple haemmoragic spots and erosions during different stages of investigation. The mice group pretreated with extract and then irradiated showed significant ulceration inhibition providing protection to stomach.

Abstract: Acacia nilotica leaves has been used to treat different diseases. In the present study, the leaves of A. nilotica was subjected to phytochemical and antifungal analysis. The extraction was done with methanol using Whatman filter paper No.1 of pore size 11 µm. The phytochemical analysis of the methanol extract of A. nilotica leaves was carried out. The extracts were evaluated for their antifungal activity. The the preliminary qualitative phytochemicals screening of crude methanol extracts of A. nilotica leaves .This showed positive test for alkaloids, glycosides, cardiac glycoside, steroids, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones, flavonoids, terpenoids and phenol. The results for the Mean Standard Deviation composition of Methanol crude extract of A. nilotica presented in Table 2 from the results, Alkaloids and Flavonoids has the highest concentration of (2.090±0.008mg/g), (1.500±0.710mg/g) respectively follow by Saponins with concentration of (0.830±0.006) and then follow by Cardiac Glycoside with concentration of, (0.507±0.008mg/g). The antifungal activities of A. nilotica leaves showed that the extracts possessed antifungal activity at various concentrations, ranging from (90 mg/ml to 30 mg/ml). The best results were obtained on Aspergillus flavus (11.06±0.06 to 6.16±0.88) followed by Aspergillus fumigatus (6.10±0.05 to 2.10±0.05), Candida albicans (5.13±0.03 to 1.06±0.03) and Aspergillus niger (2.13±0.33 to 0.00±0.00). For all the concentration the effect of A. nilotica extract was significantly increases against the fungi species beyond that of Ketoconazole. This study encourages cultivation of the highly valuable plant in large scale to increase the economic status of the cultivators and provide a support to use of plant in traditional medicine.

Abstract: For several years plants have been a source of potential drug substance which has been a resurgence of interest to researchers for natural materials as an alternative for the treatment and management of many diseases. Datura metel is a member of the family Solanaceae, shrub-like annual herb known as devil's trumpet. Pain is a devastating health problems commonly treated with traditional medicinal plants in many part of the world most especially in Africa, because of the high cost of some drugs; some have turn to consuming of plants materials to reach their desire. The roots of Datura metel have been used as pain resistant during traditional marriage rights, as such; its analgesic effect needs to be investigated for its claim. The root of Datura metel was extracted by cool maceration using methanol. Phytochemicals were screened using laboratory methods. The phytochemical screening of methanolic root extract revealed the presence of bioactive constituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, phenols and steroids while glycoside and anthraquinones were absent. Thirty albino rats were used to assess the analgesic activity of Datura metel and were divided into six groups of 5 rats each. The extract was potent at all doses as well as the standard drug when compared with negative control. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that methanol root extract of Datura metel could be used as a pain reliever in traditional medicine. This validates its analgesic and is recommended for use in analgesic formulations.

Abstract: Talinum portulacifolium (Forssk.) Asch. ex Schweinf. is an edible, perennial, herbaceous leafy vegetable that belongs to the Talinaceae family. It has a high range of medicinal uses with high nutritional value. Generally green leafy vegetables are good source of vitamins and minerals. Leaves are excellent in carotenes, low in carbohydrate and energy but they are good source of beta-carotene, calcium, riboflavin, folic acid, ascorbic acid, iron, vitamin K etc. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy of Talinum portulacifolium (Forssk.) Asch.ex Schweinf. unveiled the presence of Phosphorus, Copper, Iron, Calcium, Lead, Manganese, Magnesium and Zinc. Essential minerals such as Magnesium, Calcium, Iron and Zinc are found in large amount which is essential for the prevention of deficiency diseases and normal health of human being. It is highly nutritional; and can be used to overcome malnutrition. Talinum portulacifolium (Forssk.) Asch. ex Schweinf  is cheaply available and is a good food supplement.
