Abstract: The Rectus Sternalis is a rare anatomic variant muscle in the anterior chest wall. Its overall incidence is 3-5% worldwide. The present study was conducted on 40 cadavers in the Department of Anatomy, Rajarajeswari Medical College & Hospital to evaluate the incidence of Rectus sternalis. We observed a case of Rectus sternalis in an adult male cadaver. The frequency of this variant muscle on the basis of our study is 2.5%. The Knowledge of this variant muscle is necessary for morphologists but more importantly for clinicians & radiologists as it avoids misinterpretation of mammographic findings.

Title: Morphology of Rectus Sternalis: A Cadaveric Study

Abstract: In vitro micropropagation of Oroxylum indicum (L) Vent was established from nodal explants cultured on MS medium supplemented with varied combinations of BA and TDZ. Nodal explants were inoculated on media supplemented with various cytokinins (BA/TDZ) in combination with or without NAA (0.5 mg/l) and AgNO₃ (2 mg/l). Multiple shoot induction with maximum 5 shoots and shoot length of 5 cm was seen on MS medium containing only BA (1 mg/l) and AgNO₃ (2 mg/l). For induction of roots, in vitro shoots were treated with IBA at various concentrations on half and full strength of MS basal medium. Maximum root induction exhibited on medium containing with IBA (2.5 mg/l) and AgNO₃ (2 mg/l). The plantlets so generated were processed through hardening procedure for acclimatization and transfer to the soil.

Abstract: The present investigation was designed for studying the endophytic fungi of Altheae rosea in Qena, potentialities of plant extracts (hydrophilic and hydrophobic) against dermatophytic fungi and pathogenic bacteria. The results obtained during this investigation could be summarized as follows:

Forty four species belonging to 27 genera were isolated and identified from young and old leaves and roots of Altheae rosea, in addition to 3 types of sterile mycelium and unidentified fungi on glucose-Czapek’s agar at 28±2˚ C. It can be seen from these results obtained, the number of isolates from old leaves and roots were more than the number of isolates from young leaves and roots also the number of isolates from midrib was more than from other parts.

Abstract: To study the variations of autonomic nervous system in hypertensive patients using a set of autonomic function tests. The study included 50 hypertensive patients and set of autonomic function tests were done to assess the autonomic functions. These results were compared with age and sex matched controls (normotensives). The subjects were selected based on exclusion-inclusion criteria. Hypertensives show abnormal values on autonomic function testing, when compared with normotensives. The statistically significant differences were found between hypertensives and normotensives in some autonomic function tests. The results were obtained using ANOVA and student‘t’ –test, to study the significance of autonomic parameters. Results showed that there was significant increase in the Heart rate response to standing. Valsalva ratio & Heart rate response to deep breathing test values were decreased in Hypertensives as compared to Normotensives (p<0.05). S: L ratio also decreased, and the decrease was statistically significant (p<0.05). Isometric handgrip exercise and cold pressor tests shows that there was significant rise in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in Hypertensives as compared to Normotensives increase was statistically significant (p<0.05). From this study, it is evident that Hypertension can alter the normal autonomic functions of the body and predisposes to autonomic neuropathy. Early and regular screening of these individuals is necessary to prevent any future complications.

Abstract: The endophytic fungi can  be considered the symbiosis relationship between plants and fungi,  where the major features of mutualistic symbiosis include the lack of destruction of most cells or tissues, nutrient or chemical cycling between the fungus host, enhanced longevity and photosynthetic capacity of cells and tissues under the influence of infection,  enhanced survival of the fungus. But endophytes may produce mycotoxins, or otherwise alter host physiology and morphology of the plants. In this study, studied the ability of endophytic fungi to produce mycotoxin, and identified the mycotoxin. Can be isolated the endophytic fungi from three plants and chosen the dominant fungi and tested for producing mycotoxin and identified the mycotoxin. The chosen fungus is chaetomium sp. Firstly study The effect of Chaetomium species filtrate on Artemia salina to detect the ability of this genus to produce toxins and identify these toxins. Eight Chaetomium species out of 28 isolates tested had toxicity (high or moderate) to brine shrimp larvae, toxigenic Chaetomium species belonged to five species and these are Chaetomium atrobrunneum, C. causiiforme, C. gelasinosporum, C. globosum and C. hexagonosporum. Scondly identification of mycotoxin, sterigmatocystin was detected in different toxic extracts (8 extracts) of toxigenic Chaetomium species (5 species) in concentration varied between 12-13 µg / 50 ml medium. Four unknown compounds (yellow flouresent) at RF values 0.31, 0.4, 0.43 and 0.53 were detected in different toxic extracts.

Abstract: Bednar tumor is a rare skin cancer, also considered as pigmented type of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Diagnosis is confirmed through histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical evaluation. Bednar tumor is aggressive locally and recurrences is very often, but metastases chances are less. The most appropriate therapy procedure is micrographic surgery. The case report presents a 24 year old patient with this rare tumor in which the diagnosis was established through histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical study. The importance is emphasized for oncologists to be keen for diagnostic suspicion and have available the necessary facts to confirm the diagnosis in order to adopt the best therapy.

Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the platelet increasing property of Carica papaya leaves juice (CPLJ) in patients with dengue fever (DF).Its working starts in between 40 and 48 hours after the dosage. It was concluded that Carica papaya leaves juice (CPLJ) does significantly increase the platelet count in patients with DF and DHF. Dengue fever caused by dengue viruses (dengue 1–4) having Aedes aegypti mosquito as their principal vector, causes symptoms such as sudden onset of fever, headache, abdominal pain  and back pain along with vomiting tendencies due to which dengue fever is also known as “break-bone fever. dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS) may occur as a complication of dengue fever. A study showed that administration of papaya leaf juice was beneficial in dengue patients in elevating the total white cell counts and platelet counts. leukopenia is a decrease in the number of white blood cells (leukocytes) found in the blood, which places individuals at increased risk of infection., thrombocytopenia refer to a relative decrease of platelets and blood.

Abstract: prevention of child sexual abuse can be achieved by identifying the symptoms and causes of abuse. The aims of this study were:

1.         To describe the demographic characteristics of the participants included in the study.

2.         To look at a difference in perceived symptoms and cause of abuse according to participant’s culture (Collectivist: Arabic and Indian and Individualist from several different Western countries).

Methods: A three culture: Arabic, Indian and Western by two gender of the child: male, female by two genders of participant: male, female design was used. Twenty-eight item questionnaires from a specially designed vignette were completed by 201 participants (104 Arabic, 57 Indian and 40 Western).

Results: The major finding of the study showed that the respondents were 201 (67.0%) out of 300. Among them, 104 (51.7%), 57 (28.4%) and 40(19.9%) subjects were Arabic, Indian and Western respectively. The mean age being 35.5 years, was largely male (Male 120: Female 81), married with 1-3 children, and with a bachelor degree qualification. Majority were with 1-5 years’ of work experience. There was no significant difference according to culture regarding perceived symptoms and cause of abuse.

Conclusions: An unfair allegation of abuse is a grave risk if reporting is done too readily or with little proof, but an unassisted victim of abuse is also unacceptable. Great understanding and care is needed in trying to detect honest cases by identifying the symptoms and causes of abuse, therefore, a wider preventive method is reached.

Title: Professionals' Perceptions of Child Sexual Abuse: Symptoms and Causes in Different Cultures

Abstract: The objective was to look at differences in professionals’ perceptions of suggested reporting of child abuse according to Collectivist (Arabic and Indian) and Individualist (from several different Western countries) culture. A survey of 201 professionals was conducted. They were given a questionnaire that included demographic information and specially designed vignette concerning either a male or a female child. A significant differences was found in the Western culture, with respondents rating higher of reporting the unacceptability of fondling behaviour to the authorities. Also supporting the hypothesis, Collectivist cultures were significantly more likely than the Western respondents to report the consistent use of pornography to the authorities. Given the high prevalence of child abuse and low reporting rate; there is a need to scrutinize the current educational offerings, and produce strategies to increase reporting.

Title: Professionals' Perceptions of Child Sexual Abuse: Legal Reporting in Different Cultures

Abstract: The physical, chemical parameters and heavy metals were analysed from samples of selected surface water bodies during Monsoon, Post- monsoon, winter and Pre-monsoon seasons in year 2011-12 and 2012-13. The studied ponds situated near about an integrated steel and power plant at Mandir Hasoud, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India. The colour, Odour, Turbidity, TDS, Total Hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride, Sulphate, Nitrate, Calcium and Magnesium and all the heavy metals were found well within the prescribed norm. The Fluoride concentration in the site SW-1, SW-2 and SW-4 found slightly higher than desired limit but under permissible limit of BIS. Iron concentration found higher than permissible limit in all the samples. The higher concentration of iron may be due to deposition of suspended particulate matter from atmosphere to surface that is emitted from nearest an integrated steel and power plant.
