Abstract: The world over retail sector has been growing rapidly with increasing sophistication and modernisation of the life‐style of households and individuals and also with increasing globalisation of trade. However the Indian retail sector is under invested and has been facing the problem of backend infrastructure. There are lots of gaps in the supply chain. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has the huge impact on the economic performance of any country. Indian market is the third largest emerging market economy in the world .The retail sector contributes to more than 10% of India’s GDP and gives employment to around 40 million people in India. This paper deals with the objectives of analysing the current scenario of retailing in India and the rationale behind allowing FDI in retail sector along with its benefits to the economy. The data has been collected from the secondary sources. The paper concluded that FDI had a positive impact which has helped the overall development of the economy.

Abstract: This review examines the effect of training practices on the performance of small and medium size enterprises in the hospitality industry in Mombasa County, Kenya. The study specifically seeks to determine the effect of three components of training practices namely: training plans, training methods, and training programs on performance of SMEs in the hospitality industry. The literature review includes past literature relevant to this study. Purpose of this study is to examine the training practices in SME firms in the hospitality and how they contribute to overall performance of these organizations. Literature review also explains three training theories i.e.; Cognitive theory, Reinforcement theory and Social learning theory relevant to this study. Empirical review explains the relevance and challenges SME firms face while trying to train their employees.

Abstract: The study focused on the effects of working capital management (WCM) practices on the financial performance of tourist hotels based on the tourist hotels at the Kenyan coastal region.  Systematic random sampling was applied to select a sample of 22 hotels from the total 44 as per the Ministry of Tourism.  Questionnaires were used to collect primary data from the accountants and Managers of the hotels as they were well versed with the data required.  The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics to determine the mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum of the various variables.  Pearson correlation coefficient was also used to analyse the relationship between the dependent variable (financial performance) and the independent variable based on the inventory turnover days, number of days account receivables, number of days accounts payable and the cash conversion cycle.  All the independent variables showed a negative correlation to the net operating profit, which meant that the days of converting inventory and receivables into cash together with paying creditors needed to be shortened for increased profits. The study strongly confirmed that the hotels best financial performance strongly relates to the efficient management of working capital components whereby the shareholders’ value can be created through shortening of the cash conversion cycle.  Therefore, the management should identify the hotel’s unique working capital drivers and relevant risks and use them to develop their unique working capital management policies and practices that are in line with their business model and the overall hotel corporate strategy.

Abstract: Banks play, an important role in the modem economy by providing necessary credit to different sectors of the economy.  In recent years they have been assigned the responsibility of financing the priority sector.  The word priority sector is used for those segments of the Indian economy whose development is considered essential for the economic growth of the country and attainment of ‘social justice’, but which had received only indifferent attention from the private sector banks.  The study attempts to analyse various bankers providing financial assistance to priority sector.  The present research paper pays its attention on both Public Sector and Private sector banks in India and the expected and perceived quality on banking services and the satisfaction level of the particular service of the bank.  The credit facility is the ultimate determinant of the banking Service and decides the motivation level of the borrowers.

Abstract: Rural tourism development in Dadra & Nagar Haveli has been an important aspect of development of the local economy. Face to face interviews and focus group discussions were used to collect primary data. The findings of the study show that there is a lack of sustainable interventions and promotion strategies for the development of rural tourism. Most studies have approached tourism development in terms of its quantitative aspects. However, this study seeks to understand rural tourism development through a qualitative approach which brings an in-depth understanding of the socio-economic dynamics experienced by rural people. The study established that factors such as political disinterest, community conflict, lack of finance, poor communication, and limited knowledge are responsible for the absence of strategies to promote rural tourism. All the aforementioned reasons complement each other and pose a challenge to the sustainability of rural tourism development in Dadra & Nagar Haveli. To transform rural areas through tourism, it is imperative for the government of Dadra & Nagar Haveli to develop rural tourism strategies and policies. This study seeks to contribute to knowledge on the development of rural tourism for socio economic transformation that is sustainable ecologically, institutionally, socially, economically and capable of producing genuinely positive livelihoods outcomes.

Abstract: The study of the effect and the nexus between the nominal value of gilt-edge treasury bonds and interest rates is a fundamental one since debt has become a vital source of financing operations of a business. Consequently, the main objective of this research was to establish the effect of interest rates on value of gilt-edge Treasury bonds at Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). The general null hypothesis, H0 tested was that interest rates do not affect the value of gilt-edge Treasury bonds at the NSE. The specific objectives of the study were: To assess the effect of Central Bank Rate (C.B.R.) on value of gilt-edge Treasury bonds at NSE, to analyse the effect of Inter-bank rate (I.B.R.) on value of gilt-edge Treasury bonds at NSE and to establish the relationship between the Repurchase rate of interest (REPO rates) on value of gilt-edge at NSE. Quasi experimental research was undertaken with time series data of nominal value of treasury gilt-edged bonds being regressed against the three regressors (interest rates) using regression statistics. From the summary output, all the three rates affected the nominal value of treasury gilt-edged bonds (i.e. there was an overall effect of all the three rates under study on the value of gilt-edged treasury bonds) nevertheless, the CBR was more significant even though the combined effect (multiple R) was a weak positive one leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. Further, the CBR affected the nominal value of treasury gilt-edged bonds negatively (bidirectional relationship) whereas, the IBR and the Repo rate had a unidirectional (positive relationship).

Abstract: The paper examines the influence of internal audit independence on the financial performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in the construction industry in Mombasa County.  The specific concern is to  determine the effect of four components of internal audit independence namely: records accessibility, reporting structure, internal auditors ‘qualifications and internal audit roles on the financial performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in the construction industry in Mombasa County.  The population was 65 Class 8 National Construction Authority (NCA 8).  Systematic sampling is used in getting the sample size of the construction companies from different construction companies and expected sample derived from internal auditors, audit committee members and audit assistants of the sample population.  The font size used is between10 and 24.  The research reveals that some construction companies within Mombasa County do not accord the internal auditors the independence they deserved to effectively give their opinion on the financial statements of the organizations.  SMEs should be given Public education by the Minister for commerce and industry on the importance of internal audit independence.  The government should establish an internal audit unit, which should be independent to ensure that all SMEs in Kenya comply with the laid down audit procedures and rules.

Abstract: Zakat is among the most important systems bestowed for mankind in an Islamic order. Zakat’s functions, natures and structures are among the systems that lightened the beauty of Islam and its compassion towards establishing a sustainable development for mankind. Hence it becomes imperative to elucidate the basic tenets of Islam and to highlight zakat as basic institution of social order. Zakat is enshrined to serve two major purposes; it is among Islamic principles and ideology which makes it compulsory upon every able Muslim, and to play an active in social life of Muslim society. This study aims to examine the role of the zakat institution in creating a collective social security scheme for mutual help/sympathy among Muslim societies. the researcher employs qualitative method of research, reviewing the traditional and contemporary Islamic sources to also explicate the significance of zakat as an institution, elaborate impact of zakat on social life of Muslim society as it is the basic theme of the study. The studies is significant in creating awareness about zakat’s role among all sections of society particularly intellectual, elites and opinion leaders and to promote further research about the impact of zakat on social life of Muslim society so that zakat an institution is established in Muslim countries.

Abstract: This paper intends to explore the motivating factors of corporate zakat payment in line with the prescribed Islamic laws, it aims to check if zakat is paid based on conviction and commitments by the corporate organization or paid as tax that could be evaded when there are lapses in management. The paper reviews the concept of zakat according some selected financial institutions saddled with accounting and auditing of zakat funds, to study their perceptions of zakat and its obligation in respect to corporate payments. The methodological approach of the paper is mainly qualitative, sourcing it data from the previous literature conducted on the topic. The discussion on the analysis of the research findings indicates that there are misinterpretations of zakat leading to misconceptions and in appropriate perceptions as to whether zakat paid is to be as expense or dividend in the organizational balance sheets and income statements. The paper reveals that zakat payment is motivated by total submission to Allah’s command, motivated by earning his pleasures and avoiding his anger, zakat is also paid to benefit from spiritual and material growth and increase in wealth. The paper also presents tax rebate as a motivating tool used to facilitate corporate zakat payments.

Abstract: This study attempts to describe what the trust could be in the workplace and its importance in labor relationships. Theoretically, the construction, of this concept, establishes six types of trust; they are respectively, “dispositional trust”, “situational decisional trust”, “trusting beliefs” and “system trust” that infer “trusting intention” likely to lead to “trusting behavior”. In the workplace, healthy and rational relationships could help in the building and maintaining the trusting behavior which depends on the character or individual aspirations, ability to communicate openly and competence that could be judged on the basis of technical capacity (know-how), self-awareness, self-management and management of interpersonal relationships. It is worth to note that trust is a permanent challenge for building employees' performance and retention, the team fulfillment and the implementation of organizational strategic direction.
