Abstract: The research sought to establish the organizational determinants of employees’ retention in institutional of higher learning in Kenya a case study of Jomo Kenyatta University of agriculture and technology. The general objective of this study was to assess the determinants of employees’ retention in institutions of higher learning in Kenya: The specific objectives of the study were to investigate the influence of: remuneration, training, job security, promotion and their influence on employees’ retention.

Literature was reviewed to seek various opinions and views from the different authors in the area under study. The conceptual framework was presented giving a relationship between dependent and independent variables. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The target population was 3000 employees of the University, the study used the stratified random sampling to pick a sample size of 90 respondents. Data was collected using the questionnaires. Descriptive statistics was used aided by statistical packages for social science version 21 to computes respondents answers. Chi-square analysis was used to describe the significance of relationship between the variables under study. From the findings, it can be presumed that retention of competent employees’ is a crucial task, high turnover rate is a problematic and has a negative impact on institutions of higher learning performance. This was evidence by the fact that majority of the respondents (40.6%) were in agreement that retention of staff is practiced by JKUAT as a way of retaining a skilled human capital. The study recommends that the Universities should implements a good remuneration policy, embrace short and long term training and implement a policy stating an employee to get promoted after every three years of working, top priorities being the retention of his staff.

Abstract: Communities of practice are characterized by social association where employees share acquired knowledge. Organizations are increasingly providing Communities of Practice with resources to improve the exchange and flow of knowledge and information. The objective of the study seeks to establish the influence of communities of practice on the performance of universities in Kenya. The study used descriptive research design and a simple random sampling to select a sample of heads of departments from the chartered universities in Kenya. The unit of analysis was the chartered universities in Kenya and the unit of observation 12 chartered universities and the respondents were the heads of department.  The study collected data from a sample size of 179 by use of questionnaire. The analysis showed a correlation coefficient of a 0.307 and a coefficient of determination R square (R2) of 0.1554 at a 0.05 significance level. The study concluded that there was a significant relationship between communities of practice and performance of universities. The study recommends that university management should support the communities of practice in order to improve performance of universities. The improved performance gives a university a competitive advantage over the other universities.

Abstract: Tacit knowledge is acquired through experience and can be shared through several forms like on the job training, mentoring, coaching, communities of practices, peer assistance and knowledge sharing forums. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of mentoring on the performance of universities in Kenya. The study used descriptive research design and a simple random sampling to select a sample of heads of departments from the chartered universities in Kenya. The unit of analysis was the chartered universities in Kenya and the unit of observation 12 chartered universities and the respondents were the heads of department.. The sample size was 179. Data collection was done through questionnaires. The study established that mentoring had a correlation of 0.42 and the coefficient of determination R square (R2) was 0.176 and R was 0.419 at a 0.05 significance level correlation. Therefore the study concluded that mentoring programs had a significant influence on the performance of universities in Kenya.  The study recommends that the organizations which desire to to improve their performance should embrace mentoring as a practice of knowledge sharing.

Abstract: Current regulatory model for financial regulation in Kenya is a hodgepodge of institutional and functional regulation. There are seven Government al agencies regulating specific segments of financial services. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) licenses and supervises the operations of all commercial banks excluding the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank (KPOSB) which is regulated by the Treasury Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) are regulated  by different Government ministries. For instance, the Ministry of Finance, Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC) by the Ministry of Trade and the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) by the Ministry of Agriculture regulate the Industrial Development Bank (IDB).financial regulation is amongst the central instruments through which government seek to deliver on their policy priorities. However, a lack of consensus on how regulation should be conceptualized can make studying its nature and effects problematic. Therefore this study examined the role of public financial regulations on the performance of devolved systems of government in Kenya in Trans Nzoia County. The study examined the effect of budgetary process, funding mechanisms, cash management and ICT integration on performance of devolved systems. A descriptive research design was employed. The target population was184 staffs and the sample size was 124 staffs stratified in top, middle and operational level staffs within Trans Nzoia county financial regulatory board. Data was collected through the use of semi structured questionnaires which were administered to respondents and analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 A pilot study was conducted to pretest the validity and reliability of data collection instruments. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected analysed and presented in tables for easier interpretation.

Abstract: Although Kenya is still faced with many challenges, development of aquaculture can play a leading role in poverty reduction, and also as a source of alternative fish instead of relying on the natural ecosystem which is declining. This idea has been enforced by the government with the identification of small-scale fish farming as one of the pillars of Economic Stimulus Programme identified to jump-start the economy of Kenya. Development experts have suggested that stakeholder participation is critical to the success of projects. Stakeholders can be a considerable asset, contributing knowledge, insights and support in shaping a project brief as well as supporting its execution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Determinants of Stakeholders’ Participation on Fish Farming Projects Performance, A case of the Economic Stimulus Programmes in Nakuru County. Particularly, the study sought to examine the determinant’s of stakeholders’ participation strategy, to investigate the determinants of stakeholders’ participation policy and to assess the determinants of stakeholders’ participation tools and monitoring and evaluation on project performance. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted, target population of the study is 324 stakeholders who are involved in the fish farming project in Nakuru County and consists of five strata. Stratified random sampling and simple random sampling were used to select the sample population and the sample size was 176 respondents with a response rate of 85%. Questionnaires were used for data collection. A pilot study was done to ensure reliability of the instruments used and a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.66 was obtained. Data from the questionnaires were both qualitative and quantitative were coded in statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to establish the relationship between the study variables.

Abstract: Projects remain to be universal in all entities of life, but then ironically, the poor performance of projects and the disappointment of projects appear to be a commonest scenario. Most projects failed to be delivered within the expected time frame, quality and budget. The study was aimed at investigating the projects’ critical success factors in Kisumu County. The study sought to address the following research objectives: determine the relationship between project leadership and project success in non-governmental organizations in Kisumu County; examine the extent to which project planning influences project success in nongovernmental organizations in Kisumu County and determine the association between monitoring and evaluation and project success in non-governmental organizations in Kisumu County. A conceptual framework showing interactions of study variables guided the study. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The target population consisted of the seven project managers and 29 Field Coordinators from the seven NGOs. All the 36 respondents were used in the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to select project managers and field coordinators. The questionnaires and interview schedule were the instruments used for data collection. The research adopted the content validity to measure the validity of the instruments. The consistency of questionnaire was established through test re-test method where research tools were administered twice to the respondents. An alpha value of 0.797 was obtained. The data collected was analyzed through both descriptive and inferential statistics (Critical Index and regression analysis). Results indicate that project leadership affects positively and significantly (p<0.05) project success among NGOs; project planning had a positively and significant effect on projects success and monitoring and evaluation on project success had a statistical significant (p<0.05) positive correlation on successful completion of projects. The following were the recommendations of this study: there is need to develop quality leadership among project managers and employees. This is because; good leaders can make fair judgments toward themselves, and acknowledge both their strengths and weaknesses. They have goals and a vision, and effectively communicate their vision through words, mannerism, or actions. Since project planning is integral in organizations and pervades at all the levels of the organization, it should be accurately written and implemented to letter. Monitoring and evaluation have been noted to effectively and positively influence success of projects; therefore, it should be reinforced in the organizations during projects management. The research findings will assist policy makers and stakeholders in the counties in enhancing successful completion of projects, taking in considerations of the critical factors that affect project success and qualitative data were collected, analyzed and presented in tables and graphs format for easier interpretation.

Abstract: Despite the wide support which many humanitarian transitions offer to affected people during disasters, many challenges still arise, making it difficult for them to effectively undertake various humanitarian logistics functions and support most of the disaster victims. Over 50% of humanitarian organizations in Kenya face various humanitarian logistical challenges that hamper their operations in times of need, and this affects their supply chain performance. The overall objective of the study is to determine the effect of humanitarian logistics on supply chain performance in humanitarian organizations in Kenya: A case of Norwegian Church Aid Organization. The study-specific objectives include to; identify  the effect of humanitarian lead time on supply chain performance in humanitarian organizations in Kenya; assess the effect of humanitarian demand forecasting on supply chain performance in humanitarian organizations in Kenya; determine the effect of humanitarian inventory management on supply chain performance in humanitarian organizations in Kenya and to establish  the effect of ICT adoption on supply chain performance in humanitarian organizations in Kenya. A descriptive research design was employed. Abstract: The Kenyan government has been providing free primary education since 2003. However, most of our primary schools were built up several decades ago, and the buildings exhibit numerous maintenance issues. The status of buildings in these institutions has been the subject of discussion by various stakeholders and the focus of various interventions, but about 14 years later the status seems not to have improved. This research project aimed at examining the determinants of successful completion of building maintenance projects: A case study of Westlands Sub-County. The research focused on Primary schools within Westlands Sub-County in Nairobi County. The target population was 20 Public Primary schools located within the sub-county. This comprised of 5 stakeholders per school thus head teacher, a member of the board of governors, a member of the parents’ teacher association, pupils’ representatives and the teacher in charge of maintenance in the school hence 100 respondents. Census survey was used since the population was not huge. The research was anchored on Project Management, Program and Control theories. Data were collected by use of semi-structured questionnaires. A pilot test was conducted to detect weakness in design and instrumentation and to provide proxy data for selection of a probability sample. The study generated qualitative and quantitative data due to the nature of the instrument. The researcher cleaned data after getting the questionnaires from the field. Data were merged and tabulated on tabulation sheets on SPSS version 23.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) and Microsoft excel. Data were compared to establish any existing relationships or meaningful facts. Reporting of data was done through descriptive statistics including frequencies, means, standard deviation, and tables.

Title: Determinants of Successful completion of Building Maintenance Projects in West lands Sub-County, Kenya

Abstract: This study explores farmer’s knowledge in four select factors affecting performance of projects of broiler chicken in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya. The performance of projects of broiler chicken in the county had been rated as unsatisfactory with average harvest recovery rate of 80%.  The study objectives were; to establish the effect of farmer’s knowledge level in feeds, disease control, marketing of broilers and cost of production on performance of projects of broiler chicken. The study target population was farmers with current broiler chicken projects. Descriptive survey design was employed and data was collected through a census involving fourty (40) farmers who implemented broiler chicken projects in the months of May to July 2015. Ten (10) Livestock officers were also interviewed. Questionnaires and interview schedule were used to gather information from farmers and livestock officers respectively. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Data processing was carried out through coding, editing and tabulation. Descriptive statistical method was employed to analyze data using SPSS and Microsoft-excel softwares. The means for farmer’s Knowledge level in poultry feeds, disease control and cost of production were good while the mean for marketing of broilers was fair. The study established that farmer’s knowledge level in the studied factors caused variability in performance of projects of broiler chicken as follows; feeds and feeding 15.7%, diseases control 15.9%, marketing of broilers 17.2% and cost of broiler production 7.8%. In total, farmer’s knowledge level in feeds, disease control, marketing and cost of production accounts for 56.6% variability in performance of projects of broiler chicken. 43.4% variability in performance was attributed to other variables not investigated by the study. Farmers knowledge level showed positive correlation to performance for the four factors studied and the correlation was significant (P<0.001) in each case. These findings can be used by farmers, researchers and the government in policy formulation. Further research is recommended on effect of farmer’s knowledge level in other factors which affect performance of projects of broiler chicken.

Abstract: A popular conception of globalization means it is a business strategy meaning doing everything the same way everywhere. This paper explore current trends on globalization that is hinged on industry 4.0 and how Nigeria as an entity stands to benefit  from it if the current global growth is sustained. The paper explore the issue of industry 4.0 vis-à-vis some key economic sector of Nigeria. These include agriculture/industry, information and telecommunication and most essentially youth employment. The paper identified training and retraining of the youth as a panacea to sustained economic growth. The paper equally identified the Agricultural sector, information and telecommunication sector, mining and solid minerals sectors as key area that needed to comply with industry 4.0 taking cognisance of youth empowerment. The paper recommends that digitization and automation should be seen to improve the lives of the citizenry and by working together the economic community can create better chance for the people. By understanding each other better we will have a world order of peace and tranquillity.  Nigeria needs to embrace technology, because technology drives globalization.

Abstract: Recently, revitalization of art and culture in Korean cities has given new life to small commercial districts that used to lag behind. Such revitalized cities are seen as fresh, attractive hotspots for sightseeing and entertainment; however, gentrification is becoming more serious. Gentrification in Korea is unique in that its effects reach not only the regional economy and its small businesses but also the area’s culture and history. Korea's old downtown areas created by rapid urbanization in the 1970s contain history and culture that trace the flow of generation. In order to balance city development and perseverance of culture, the search for a solution to gentrification must take into consideration the destructive influence of excessive commercialization on the region’s original ecosystem. In other words, solutions must be accommodated according to Korea’s specific characteristics: culture, the economy, and history. This research studies the changes in culture and the commercial environment due to gentrification in Korea. This article contains a closer observation of the before and after effects of gentrification in three areas in Seoul: Samchung-dong, Insa-dong, and Yongsan area. It further lists possible solutions based on policies that have recently been put forward by the Korean government.

Abstract: Market entry strategies have been known to increase sales, brand awareness and business stability in various industries across the world. The success and sustainability of any organization in a competitive environment may be determined by its market entry strategy. This entails a planned method of delivering goods and services to a new market and distributing them there. The challenges of the business environment in the 1990s, characterized by fragmented markets, increased competition, rapid technological changes, shifting regulatory frameworks, and a growing dependence on non-price competition have forced many businesses to more closely scrutinize their competitive strategy. The increased competition has been further fueled by communication and liberalization of the major world economies. This has reduced the world into a global village as far as business transactions are concerned. As a result, organizations are facing stiff competition from both local and foreign competitors. In order to compete and survive in the competitive environment, different organizations are adopting different strategies, including but not limited to venturing into foreign markets. The telecommunication industry is no exception. The choice of market entry strategies is now a dominant driver that shapes the landscape of how these firms compete on the basis of costs and risks involved. A well-developed market entry strategy coupled with proper execution will result in the organization’s success. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the relationship between strategic market entry practices and financial performance of telecommunication firms in Kenya. The population of interest for this study was 290 top level employees of the three telecommunication firms in Kenya, namely Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. A sample of 145 employees was randomly selected to participate in this study after applying 50% criterion in selection. The study used a mixed research design, which allowed for both quantitative and qualitative data capture. Primary data was collected through questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as, mean, frequencies and inferential statistics (regression and correlation analysis) were used to analyze data. The study recommends that the management of telecommunication firms in Kenya should have a paradigm shift towards the spirited entry into unexplored markets as it pays to be a pioneer in the market. The benefits of a spirited entry into unexplored markets seem to outweigh the disadvantages. This therefore means that the sooner the entry into a foreign market, the better for a firm's performance in this specific market and the sooner the entry into a specific market, the higher the probability that the pattern of market entry modes can be characterized by incrementally increasing commitment. The study also recommends it would be appropriate for the management of telecommunication firms to exploit the market entry practices when developing their strategic plan with the aim of ensuring a competitive advantage over other market competitors thus attaining superior firm performance.

Abstract: Tremendous implementation of technology on organizations has amplified the use of information systems in various functions and departments for organizational competitive advantage and success. Even though Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) propels this technology rush, little information exists on HRIS in devolved systems within Vihiga County Government forming the focus of this study. To get a clear understanding of the effect of human resource information systems on systems performance in Vihiga County, this study assessed the levels of systems manipulation of human resource functions like e-recruitment, e-training and development, e-payroll management and performance management on proper decision making to determine the underlying assumption of this research study. This study used a descriptive research design method, by employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The target population of the study was 1689 with a sample size of 313 of HRIS users and service providers who serve in Vihiga County. Questionnaires were used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Stratified sampling was adopted to identify category of respondents for the study. Qualitative data was analyzed under the thematic method and quantitative data under statistical method. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to establish the relationship between the study variables. The study recommends that online recruitment should be adopted for time management or rather to speed up the process. Such an approach will make HRIS technological recruitment process. There is need however to fully entrench the concept of training by ensuring that training policy and training strategies are designed by a specific period in the calendar year HRIS.

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a rapid diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICT) in African countries, in line with similar patterns in other regions of the developing world. Some studies have observed that the economic and social return of ICT development is larger than the private return of the network provider. Major technological development in the banking system is Core Banking System (CBS), which provides anytime, anywhere banking facilities. Other developments include electronic payment systems such as the Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS), National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), National Electronic Clearing Service (NECS), Immediate Payments Service (IMPS), Aadhaar Enabled Payment Systems (AEPS), etc. Banks are increasingly using alternate channels of delivery. Specifically, the study was guided by the following objectives: to establish the role of mobile banking on financial inclusion in Kenya, to determine the role of agent banking on financial inclusion  in Kenya, to assess the role of internet banking on financial inclusion in Kenya  and to find out the role of table banking on financial inclusion in Kenya. The research design was a case study of special interest groups in Kenya on financial inclusion. The target population was 3000 people. Questionnaires were used for data collection. This study produced both quantitative and qualitative data. Once the questionnaires are received, they were coded and edited for completeness and consistency. Quantitative data was analyzed by employing descriptive statistics and inferential analysis using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 24.  The data was then presented using frequency distribution tables, bar charts and pie charts for easier understanding. The findings showed that mobile banking has a positive and significant effect on the financial inclusion of special interest groups, β1 = 0.396, p-value = 0.000. Agent banking has a positive and significant effect on the financial inclusion of special interest groups, β2 = 0.334, p-value = 0.000. Internet banking has a positive and significant effect on the financial inclusion of special interest groups, β3 = 0.142, p-value = 0.013 while table banking has a positive and significant effect on the financial inclusion of special interest groups, β4 = 0.289, p-value = 0.000. There were gaps that were identified that would result in the curtailing of these positives.

Abstract: The study examined the impact of credit risk management on the performance of rural banks in Ghana. The study adopted both descriptive and quantitative research approaches. Twelve (12) rural banks in the Ashanti region were used for the study. Secondary data were obtained from the annual financial reports from 2010 to 2015 of the rural banks. Regression analysis was used to test the impact of credit management on the performance of the rural banks. Both Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) and Corporate Liquidity (cash ratio) were used as measures of performance whilst Portfolio at Risk (PAR) and Loans Recovery Rate (LRR) were used as measures of credit risk management. The result obtained showed that portfolio at risk (PAR) had a significant negative impact on both ROCE and liquidity of the rural banks. The evidence further showed that the loans recovery rate (LRR) of the rural banks had a positive and significant impact on their ROCE and liquidity. It is concluded that both PAR and LRR has an impact on the liquidity and profitability of the rural banks in the Ashanti region. It is recommended to the management of these rural banks that they should work to keep the portfolio at risk to a minimum and tolerable level of 5% as per BOG Policies.
