Abstract: Floriculture has received a considerable attention in India in recent years from policy makers, researchers, agriculture and horticulture planners. International flower trade has increased significantly due to huge demand of floriculture products in the world. Floriculture plays a vital role in the diversification of agriculture in India and Karnataka state. The objective of the present study is to find out trends in area, production and yield per hectare in India as well as in Karnataka. To full fill these objectives secondary data have been used. The methodology used for analysis is tabular method and LOGEST function in Microsoft excel. The study findings highlight that an increasing trend has been found in the area, production and yields per hectare in India and in Karnataka, area and production are increasing but yield per hectare is decreasing. The main reason for increase in area, production and yield per hectare is found to be better returns from floriculture.  The reason for decrease in yield per hectare is due to poor technology, inadequate knowledge about floriculture, unseasonal rainfall, unfavourable climatic condition and low quality planting materials.

Abstract: It’s clear to everyone in our present day that the word “rape” describes a terrible situation that one would dare find a funny topic to laugh about.  But back in 1714, when the “Rape of the Lock”, was published by Pope, the word “rape” had a totally different concept.  Of course, it was understood as we now know it today, but it could also mean taking anything forcibly.  (In our analysis we will discuss how both meanings are active)

Two years before the publishing of the poem, at a very fancy party outside London, young Lord Petre cut off a lock of hair from young lady Belle Fermor’s head, by sneaking up behind her.  Of course neither Belle nor her parents approved of this action, especially since they were considering him as a husband for Belle.  Instead of a marriage, the two families went into a feud, Capulet, Montague style. After a while things got so bad between the two families that a mutual friend asked Alexander Pope to write a poem about the situation to make it seem funny.  Back in the old days, it was popular to write political and social satire that everybody would read.

Pope took the incident and turned it into a satire on both social pretension and vanity.  In the end, Pope succeeded in uniting the two families together through his poem.  He ridiculed the crisis of a spoiled society girl who lost a piece of hair to a rich boy’s prank.  Pope made the situation larger and more interesting and comical by adding supernatural beings, like the Sylphs, and compared it to major Classical epics like Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.

Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock delivers on many levels: social, poetic, political, and aesthetic.  All that is to say that the poem is a great Mock Epic!

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to find out whether parental marital status play a role influencing learner achievement of Unity preschool children in Embakasi District Nairobi County. The study utilized a descriptive survey research design. The target population of the study involved children, teachers and parents of Unity preschool in Embakasi district. The sample size comprised of 27 parents, 27 children and 5 teachers in Unity preschool. The findings of the study suggested that the type of family affects the learner achievement of children. This was followed by the findings that the children from single parent homes and polygamous families are socio-economically disadvantaged due to lack of resources therefore affecting the learner achievement.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of parental educational level on the academic achievement of Unity preschool children in Embakasi district Nairobi County. The study utilized a descriptive survey research design. The target population of the study involved children, teachers and parents of Unity preschool in Embakasi district. The sample size comprised of 27 parents, 27 children and 5 teachers in Unity preschool. The finding of the study indicate  that a majority of the parents had a low academic level since most of them were KCSE certificate holders and hence are not capable enough to guide their children on academic matters leading to poor academic achievement .

Abstract: Learning strategies have been the center of attention and have gained great importance in the teaching-learning environment. These are specific actions taken by learners to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferable in new situations. With the conviction that learner strategies are the key to learner autonomy, language teachings most important aspiration should be the facilitation of that key.

This study aimed to determine the language learning strategies of students at Ifugao State University (IFSU), the only Higher Education Institution (HEI) in the province of Ifugao. In addition, it will guide language instructors in their language teaching.

Rebecca Oxford’s Strategy Inventory on Language Learning (SILL) was used as a primary instrument to gather data. Respondents were 290 freshman students from three colleges of IFSU. Slovin’s formula and stratified sampling were used to identify number of male and female respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multivariate analyzes of variances (MANOVAs) and independent samples t-tests.

Results revealed that IFSU tertiary freshman students use language learning strategies (LLS) at a medium level. Age and ethno-linguistic affiliation have no significance in the use of LLS; but gender, course and college affiliation affected the use of LLS in the classroom.

Abstract: The continual widespread advances in fashion and particularly garment construction has encouraged many individuals to adopt new methods of improving the way their clothes fit and look on their figure.  This study investigated the antecedents of mobile garment alteration business in Ghana with a particular focus on its benefits, potentials and the challenges. The study employed the qualitative methodological approach for the conduct of the survey. Employing the snowball sampling technique, 14 participants from the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions of Ghana were used for the study. Thematic analysis was conducted on the collected data and inferences drawn. The study found that in Ghana, entry into the mobile garment alteration business is somewhat a family-based heritage passed on from one generation to the other. The study also discovered that the mobile garment alteration business serves as a principal source of income for most alterationist.

Abstract: Several variables that are endemic in the fabrics of political arrangements in Nigeria tend to constitute road blocks to sustainable livelihoods in rural Nigeria. This study analysed the political factors affecting rural household livelihoods in Southeast Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study identified the predominant rural household livelihoods and analysed the political factors affecting rural household livelihoods in the study area. With the aid of a structured and validated interview schedule, data were collected from a sample size of 180 household-heads selected in the study area using a multistage sampling procedure. The statistical tools used in data analysis included mean, frequency, percentage and factor analysis. The result shows that the predominant rural household livelihoods in southeast Nigeria included crop farming (mean = 3.47), livestock farming (mean = 3.13), farm labour (mean = 2.84) and farm product processing (mean = 2.82), petty trading (mean =3.13), remittances from relatives (mean = 2.70) and civil service (mean = 2.58). The political factors affecting rural household livelihoods in the study area were lack of continuity in government development programmes (mean = 3.42), lack of government presence and attention in communities in terms of development projects (mean = 3.40), irresponsible lifestyle of elected representatives in government (mean = 3.42), poor targeting and miscarriage of government development programmes and policies (mean = 3.39), exploitative government policies such as unfavourable taxes, subsidy removal on farm inputs, land reforms etc (mean = 3.36), marginalisation of some communities in government affairs (mean = 3.24), lack of social welfare policies (mean = 3.28), insensitivity of government to the plight of people in communities (mean = 3.42), political upheavals (3.36). Factor analysis result showed 2 major social factor loadings affecting livelihood strategies of households in the study area as ineffective rural development implementation policy and inadequate social security policy. It is concluded that political factors affected rural household livelihood in Southeast Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that sustainable programmes on political reforms and value re-orientation should be carried out in Nigeria.

Abstract: The study assessed the differences in job and organizational commitments among extension agents in Rivers State ADPs. Data were collected from 61 respondents who were randomly selected from a total population of 117 Extension Agents in Rivers State ADPs using structured questionnaire. Analysis of data was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistics such as percentage, mean and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The result revealed that about 64% of the Extension Agents are within the age group of 40-49 years, about 82% are males, about 64% have 11-15 years of working experiences in Rivers State ADPs, and about 42% possess Bachelor Degree in Agriculture. The ANOVA result showed that there are  significant differences in the level of job commitment among Extension Agents of different age groups (F= 0.0037) and different levels of educational qualification (F = 0.01). It was recommended that the Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) should intensify efforts at boosting the Fortnightly Training of Extension Agents and other staff improvement programmes since such programmes enhance the technical and professional skills and competence of extension agents for agricultural extension service delivery.
