Abstract: This study examined the influence of warehousing management systems on sales of maize in Abia State, Nigeria. A random sampling technique was employed to select 45 maize marketers. Simple descriptive statistics such as tables, frequency and mean were used to ascertain warehouse type mostly used among maize marketers. Correlation analysis wasdone to ascertain the relationship between warehousing and sales. It was observed that warehousing systems in the study area are lowly practiced and commercial warehouse were predominant in the study area as most maize marketers do not own their own warehouse.Cost of warehousing system is the major factor considered before choosing warehousing system to be practiced.The study recommends that maize marketerseither as individuals or group through association should build ormanage warehouses for their members with a consideration of its accessibility in terms of location. This will enable maize marketers utilize the opportunities that modern warehousing avails.

Abstract: Students who undertake quantitative or mixed methods research within the fields of Social Science are usually instructed to test the reliability of their survey scales. The most common method used is Chronbach’s alpha. In fact it is the default test for scale reliability in SPSS.  This article proposes that a traditional alpha analysis may be unsuitable for Social Science research as it’s output often causes students to wrongly doubt the validity of their quantitative analysis. A high response, low response Chronbach’s alpha analysis is suggested as a solution to this problem.

Abstract: Organization’s culture has a strong effect on all of those who are attached with the organization. It is considered that culture is invisible but if the organizations want to improve the performance of the employees and profitability, norms are places first to look in to. This research sought to study the role of organizational culture on performance of devolved government in Kenya a case of Laikipia County. Specifically, the study sought to; determine the role of rational management, induction, code of conduct and employee values on enhancing performance of devolved government. Descriptive research design was used for this study whose target population was the employees of Laikipia County Government. A sample of 4 top level management, 20 middle level management and 80 lower level management that total up to 104 respondents were picked from the eight department of the County government using systematic cluster sampling method. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire. Secondary data was also used. Analysis was done using SPSS version 23. The findings of this study is of importance to the management of Laikipia County Government in understanding the success and challenges of organizational culture that enhances performance of devolved government in Kenya. This contributes to improvement in enhancing performance of the employees and the management in the counties. The study is also of value to the academicians and future researchers as it adds knowledge to the field of organizational culture and give an understanding on the relationship between organizational culture and performance of devolved government. Other than adding value to the body of knowledge, the study acts as a basis for further research on various aspects under study. The findings, revealed that rational management positively influences the performance of devolved government. The Laikipia government management does training of employees as a type of rational management. The employees do not a common conviction in decision-making. The employees are not inducted in to the system and the new employees’ socialization with other employees is enhance by the managers through team work. The leaders integrate the new employees into the system and new employees do not understand the organization’s employment philosophy. The findings showed that there were no norms prevailing among employees and the management was not committed to the most experienced staff. The code of conduct facilitates the transition from traditional business and there are no standards prevailing that promote creativity and innovation. It was found out that employees’ values influence the performance of devolved government positively. Positive attitude was not an aspect of employees’ values that the county employees did not possess. The study recommends that the management to come up with programs of enhancing staff induction, rational management, employees code of conduct and employee’s values.

Abstract: In developing countries, poverty continues to pose livelihood challenges among rural populations. One of the subtle impacts of livelihood assets on livelihood choices is their implication on poverty. Most studies regarding poverty overlook implications of livelihood assets on rural livelihood choices. The purpose of this study is to investigate how livelihood assets influence household livelihood choices in Kieni East and West sub counties of Nyeri County. The study adopted cross sectional research design, involving mixed method approaches to collect data. Household survey was the main source of quantitative data collection, while the qualitative aspect of data was collected using semi structured interviews, participant observations, and desk reviews. Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling Technique was used to establish a 400 sample size in 10 sub locations. Log linear analysis was applied in the determination of influence of livelihood assets on livelihood choices. Based on the analysis, the effect of human, physical, financial, natural and social assets was determined on forest, crop, livestock, and off farm activities. Results show only human and financial assets affects the entire four livelihoods, physical assets three activities and natural and social assets only affected two of the livelihood activities. The asset with the most significant influence was human (education and health) on forest activities [λ=0.470], while local institutions had least influence on forest activities [λ= -0.159]. The results of the study demonstrate that household assets determine livelihood choices, which in the long run affect household wellbeing. The study concludes with some recommendations for policy consideration.

Abstract: Cash Transfer Programme was started in 2006 to plug older persons out of extreme poverty and state of powerlessness that come with old age. This study explored the influence of cash transfer Programme on the empowerment of elderly persons in North Maragoli Location, Vihiga County, Kenya. This study assessed the influence of food security promotion on the empowerment of elderly persons. The study used explorative research design that involved use of structured questionnaire to collect data on study variables. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 101 elderly beneficiaries of cash transfer programme. This technique was suitable as the respondents had unique characteristics. Primary data was gathered using questionnaires and interviews. Quantitative data analysis was applied using descriptive statistics. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to enter the data and perform several statistical computations, for instance averages, frequencies and percentages, cross tabulations to summarize and describe the data collected. Inferential statistics involved use of correlations and regression analysis to infer the findings to the entire population. Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis and presented in form of tables and figures. The study findings revealed that food security promotion had a positive correlation with empowerment at 95% confidence level (r=0.401; P<0.05), R Squared=0.161. The study recommends that quality of meals, quality of medical care, and quality of surroundings for elderly persons should be investigated in order to realize full empowerment.

Abstract: One of the major problems confronting Nigeria as a country is the high level of inequality and marginalization across Nigeria. Therefore, the Federal government of Nigeria established the Federal Character Principle as a policy measure to check the problem of inequality and marginalization that has led to the lopsidedness in the country. The objective of this paper therefore is to conceptualize the Federal Character Principles as a policy measure aimed at ending perceived marginalization and inequality in the Nigeria. Secondary source of data collection was used for this paper; specifically scholarly journals, text books, conference/seminar papers, articles, handbooks, governmental official document and dictionaries was consulted and used for this study. For the purpose of analyses the study adopt the content analysis of scholarly input with the decision making theory as it analytical framework. The research discovered that the whole essence of the establishment of the Federal Character Principles as a policy measure for equitable distribution of governmental activities in the Nigeria remains an admirable policy mechanism of the Federal Government of Nigeria but it interpretation and implement is far from it main objectives. Hence, this paper recommends a strict adherence to policy guidelines and massive orientation is needed to draw the intention of the general public to the major objectives of the Federal Character Principles.

Abstract: This research was conducted to give the empirical evidence about the influence of leadership style on budget attitude with game patterns as mediating variables. Game patterns can be measured by four variables which are devious game pattern, economic game pattern, incremental game pattern, and time game pattern. Collecting data in this study was conducted using a survey through the distribution of questionnaires. Respondents was selected by purposive sampling method with the following criteria, respondents who work as structural officers in private universities located in West Jakarta, Bandung, and Banten with minimum of one year experience in his/her position, and actively involved in the budgeting process. The analysis technique used is path analysis. This research was successfully proved game patterns as intervening variables. However, this research has not been able to provide empirical evidence about the positive influence of leadership style on the budget attitude.

Abstract: Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has immense potential as a teaching/learning tool in Teaching English as Second Language (TESL).  Teachers often misconstrue it as a teaching methodology which results in rendering the tool ineffective.  There is an acute lack of awareness as well as necessary technical knowhow among teachers to use CALL in the classroom.  Furthermore, due to its multifold capabilities, CALL redefines the role of the teacher and the students in a CALL enhanced class.  Even though CALL appears to deliver lessons effectively, it cannot replace a teacher in the classroom.  The teacher plays a very important role in directing the students in making the optimal use of the tool.  This paper aims at enumerating the capabilities of CALL in teaching/learning the four language skills.  It also discusses the new roles assigned to the teacher and the students in a CALL enhanced learning environment.  It makes a comparison of their roles both in the conventional teaching environment and in the CALL setup.

Abstract: This study aims at investigating errors in paragraph writing committed by Saudi EFL university students of College of Science & Arts in Tanumah at King Khalid University in the academic year 2017/2018 during the second semester. For this purpose, research questions are posed and the answers to these questions are provided and discussed.. The population of this study includes all fourth level students besides EFL university instructors in the above-mentioned college. The analytical descriptive approach is adopted by the researcher. The study focuses on the errors in organizational structure and formatting elements of Saudi EFL university students' written paragraph .Testing, structured interview and personal observation of the researcher are all used as tools for collecting data. The findings of the study reveal that the students have weakness in paragraph writing due to some factors such as: EFL learners’ lack of the adequate stock of vocabulary which results from insufficient English language proficiency besides EFL university learners' lack of motivation. Moreover, there are insufficient activities and practice of basic techniques of writing in addition to the lack of follow-up to writing performance of EFL learners. Finally, the recommendations and pedagogical implications are provided.

Abstract: One of the most dreaded subjects in the Nigerian public secondary schools is English language. This is because over the years, several students’ ambitions have been truncated by their poor performance in the subject yet the role that English language must play in Nigeria is a very great one: as the lingua franca, language of trade and commerce, language of instruction in schools and language of politics. The language has to be learnt and used for effective communication in these spheres. It is discovered that in spite of several good textbooks available for use in Nigerian secondary schools, the dismal performances of students in this subject is as a recurring decimal. Students have challenges with different aspects of English language and find it difficult to use the four basic languages skills in the right manner. This paper looks at English vocabulary knowledge specifically as a major factor for language skills development and how Literature-in-English can revamp the fallen standard of English usage to enhance the performance of students’ vocabulary knowledge. Among others, the researcher recommends that literature-in-English is taught with more seriousness in secondary schools.

Abstract: This study explores the operational and economic impact of crude oil production and exploitation on fishing activities in the Jomoro district of the Western Region of Ghana since 2010, the year of commercial production of crude oil in Ghana. In all, 40 respondents were sampled for the study using a purposeful sampling approach. The respondents, who were drawn from the Half-Assini, a fishing community in Jomoro district, were grouped into three major categories: ‘fishermen, fishmongers, and households referred to as consumers’. Interview guides and observation strategies were the main research instruments that were designed and administered for data collection. The study revealed that the general perception of respondents’ was earlier positive because they were expecting the oil and gas activities to boost their livelihood operations. The result, however, shows that the standard of living of the community has dropped caused by lack of many social amenities in the community and limitations imposed by authorities on their fishing activities. The study concludes that the oil and gas exploitation activities had caused great reduction in the quantity of fish catch as a result of the high lighting system used at the oil rigs which attracts fishes away from their operational domain of the fishermen. The study recommends the relaxation of rules to ensure that locals are not deprived of the fishing resources which constitute their social and economic mainstay.

Abstract: The Filipino capability on disaster response and human and resource management were tested by super typhoon ‘Yolanda’ (International name, Haiyan). The magnitude of damage was enormous which even claimed thousands of lives. The survivors had the most horrible memories and lessons are learned hardest way. Even reports of the coming of new typhoons caused people to panic especially in most vulnerable communities.  However, despite the terrifying experience, ‘Yolanda’ survivors in Botlog Island, Concepcion, Iloilo, Philippines chose to stay and restore their livelihood in the very place where they witnessed and suffered the devastation of the monstrous typhoon.  Within a year, government rehabilitation programs were implemented. Relocation areas were identified and prepared for their presumed safety. Yet, people are reluctant to leave their homes although they are highly aware of the danger that another typhoon might bring. This qualitative study investigates deeply the underlying reasons why people in Botlog Island prefer to stay and restore their means of living in a location identified to be highly dangerous. In-depth interview to 25 households and 30-day immersion in the communities were done. There are overlapping evidences on whether people exhibit resiliency or complacency on reasons why they chose to rebuild their way of life in disaster-risk communities. The reasons could be summed up into socio-economic factors. Despite the economic and topographic concerns, people had established disaster response and resource management capability through pattern of experiences though, challenged by the extremely catastrophic event. The environment taught them to be adaptive and develop mechanisms to adjust to the changing conditions only to find out their incapability to withstand and recover from tragedy.  Their attachment to the place with its rich natural resources and the belief on their capacity to withstand the onslaught of storm gave them inner strength and self-satisfaction only to figure out that these cannot guarantee them safety.

Abstract: African indigenous education is a mode of study that was fashioned to propagate and disseminate African economic and socio-cultural practices. This study gyrates on the extent to which this education inculcated ideal environmental consciousness among its recipients. The study analyses philosophical canons of indigenous African education and the role each canon played in sustaining a healthy environment. The method used in this study is analysis as it facilitates easy juxtaposition of philosophical canons of African indigenous education with the tenets of ecopedagogy. The study submits that African education was ecologic. This has been neglected yet it is useful in guaranteeing environmental sustainability. Place-based learning, revision of the curriculum to incorporate ecopedagogy and awareness creation through seminars are the approaches recommended by the study.

Abstract: This study analyses the effects of attitude factors, subjective norms, and control of the behavior of rice farmers' desire to comply with pesticide regulations. As stated in the planned behavior theory, farmer intentions are influenced not only by their attitudes but also by subjective norms and behavior control factors. The results show that the relative importance of attitude, subjective norm, and behavior control might vary according to farmer's strategy regarding the agricultural activity and the type of pesticide they use. The socioeconomic background factor of rice farmers is an important variable affecting compliance intentions. Furthermore, the level of education and training will take part as two critical variables in establishing the intention of pesticide handling with the correct technique. This study shows the importance of training to rice farmers to improve their compliance with pesticide regulations.

Abstract: Rotterdam is a big city in the Netherlands, characterized by an economic focus on its port and industry, and by the large share of migrants and blue-collar workers in its population. Every two years a survey is conducted on the Rotterdam population and they are asked a wide variety of questions, including a question on their happiness. In this paper, we use the data on happiness to answer the following questions:

1) How happy are people in Rotterdam?

2) How happy are Rotterdammers compared to people living in other places?

3) Has happiness in Rotterdam changed in the past decade?

4) Does happiness differ across districts in Rotterdam?

5) What drives the differences in happiness found between different Rotterdam districts?

We find that inhabitants of Rotterdam are fairly happy on average, but somewhat less happy than people in other places in the Netherlands. Average happiness increased slightly between 1997 and 2009, varying with the economic tide. There are substantial differences in happiness across districts in Rotterdam, these are largely due to composition of the population. Rotterdam has attracted relatively many not too happy people, more of whom live in some districts than in others.
