Abstract: This research was carried out to examine the determinants of the cost of living of the Households in Kajiado North sub county. It attempted to answer: What is the influence of utilities on the cost of living of the Kajiado county residents? What is the influence of the household income on the cost of living of the Kajiado county residents? How does inflation affect the cost of living of the Kajiado county residents? How do taxes influence the cost of living of the Kajiado county residents? The study reviewed theories that are relevant to the study. These theories included the utility choice theory, the cost-push theory and the market-power theory of inflation. This study was based on a qualitative and quantitative research method, using the descriptive survey design, to depict the participants in an accurate way.  Information was collected using a questionnaire distributed to the sample of 399 respondents, randomly selected from the clusters in the target population, representing the entire population of 138,561 households. The collected data was critically analyzed for easy evaluation and presentation, using means, standard deviations, percentages bar-graphs and tables. The results indicated that goods and services for were available in timely manner when needed in nearby locations in their preferred value and satisfaction was experienced. Non availability of enough income determined cost of living; unemployment affected their cost of living and household income is mostly sufficient to cater for their basic needs only. There was a steady rise of prices of goods and services consumed; this affected their purchasing power and in turn reduces their spending power. There was a perception that taxes don’t improve the household’s cost of living, taxes reduces household investments and high taxation demand of goods and services consumed. The study recommends for an increase in the scope for future studies to cover development of concepts that can have a lasting effect in creating an environment that will sustain manageable cost of living

Abstract: The relation between Kenya and Saudi Arabia traced back to the pre-colonial era has seen set up of bilateral agreements of economic, political and security nature including set up of economic blocs. However, spots of insecurity incidences that have marred these countries ranging from terrorism to human trafficking and inter-tribal conflicts for the case of Kenya have tainted the diplomatic environment between these two countries. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of human trafficking on Kenyan foreign policy with Saudi Arabia. Specifically, the study sought to establish the status of human trafficking in Kenya and Saudi Arabia in relation to foreign policy; to determine the diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Kenya in light of Kenya's foreign policy towards Saudi Arabia; and to provide solutions to Kenya's human trafficking issues related to Kenya's foreign policy towards Saudi Arabia. This study was carried out as a descriptive survey where qualitative data was collected. The study was conducted in Nairobi, Kenya. The study targeted a population of 25 persons drawn from Government of Kenya Foreign Affairs office, the directorate of criminal investigation, the national police service, and Embassy of Saudi Arabia.  The study used a mix of purposive and snowball sampling to select all the 25 respondents. This study relied on both primary and secondary sources of data. The instruments for collecting data from the field were interview guides for the Ministry, consulate, police service and the directorate of criminal investigation officials. Content validity and construct validity was established by the study through seeking expert opinion from the lecturers and supervisor. To determine reliability of the data collection tool, the study did a pre-test of the tools in a pilot study within the Ministry. Data from the pilot study was then subjected to reliability index Cronbach’s alpha test where the reliability index was 0.82 (82%) which is above the recommended 0.70 indicating the instruments were reliable enough. Content analysis has been used to analyse the data by systematically and objectively identifying specific themes from the data representing the foreign policies informing Kenya-Saudi Arabia diplomatic relations. According to the 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report for Kenya by the United States Department of state, Kenya is ranked at Tier 2 in its anti-trafficking capacity. This ranking is based on Kenya’s ability to track and curb human trafficking. The report also points out that officials from the Kenyan government negotiated for pay below the minimum wage for Kenyans working in Saudi thereby exposing the job seekers to trafficking. The report further recognizes the following types of exploitation experienced by Kenyans being trafficked to Saudi. There was a general view by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials and Saudi Consulate interviewees that Kenya enjoyed a positive long-lasting relationship with Saudi Arabia. This was in line with existing literature which traces that the cordial relationship between Kenya and Saudi could be traced to 1979 initiated by President Daniel arap Moi which was also boosted by President Mwai Kibaki’s visit in 2012. This resulted in various Foreign direct investments by Saudi in Kenya. The study reviewed existing literature and the MOFA to establish the provisions of Kenya’s policy on foreign relations. Since pre-independence, Kenya has fought for its liberation and sovereignty guided by five paramount pillars of peace, economic development, diaspora, environmental and cultural diversity. These pillars have anchored the post-independence Kenya’s foreign policy to date albeit the different approaches and vision by the different presidents over the years. This is because the ultimate goal of the pillars is to leverage Kenya’s bilateral and multilateral relations for sustainable development in line with sustainable development goals and the vision 2030. The foreign policy for Kenya was first drawn and written in 2014 guided by the country’s hope for peaceful coexistence between Kenya and countries with similar objectives while promoting Kenya’s political, economic, and social interests as embodied in Kenya’s National Anthem, the Constitution and Kenya Vision 2030.

Abstract: There have been escalating historical tensions between Kenya and Somalia in the recent past ranging between land and sea border disputes and many more. The tensions between the two countries escalated when Kenya sent its troops under the United Nation’s AMISOM to restore peace and order in the wore torn Somalia. Over the years, the Kenyan government has raised issues with regards to the perceived insecurity brought about by presence of Somalia refugees in Kenya. This formed the basis for this study to critically assess the influence of refugees’ presence on Kenya’s relation with Somalia. The study specifically sought to assess the extent of Somali refugees of Kenya, to determine the diplomatic relationship between Kenya and Somalia, to establish the link between existence of refugees and diplomatic relations between Kenya and Somalia, and to suggest the possible approaches. This research was carried out as a descriptive survey where qualitative and quantitative data was collected. The study targeted a population of 217,444 individuals comprising 214,446 Somali refugees residing in Dadaab refugee camp and 3 officials’ one from the Government of Kenya Foreign Affairs office, one from Federal republic of Somalia Foreign Affairs and one from UNHCR. The researcher used a mix of proportionate and random sampling to select 384 respondents who were interviewed using questionnaires and guided interviews. At the onset of the research, the researcher piloted the data collection tools over 37 participants from Ifo camp within Dadaab refugee complex where the reliability of the instruments was ascertained with a reliability index of 0.825(82.5%). This ascertained that the research tools were reliable and hence further analysis could be done. The collected data was downloaded from the Kobo platform in Excel format after which it was cleaned to remove outliers. The researcher then coded and fed the data into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. From SPSS, the researcher ran for frequencies and measures of central tendencies. Research findings indicate that Kenya hosts 433,212 registered refugees and 54,476 asylum-seekers. 60% of the refugee population is of Somali origin nearly 80% of them residing in the Dadaab refugee camps. Most of the respondents at 43% (165) believe that the country-of-origin characteristics have highly increased Somali’s relationship with Kenya. 44% (167) note that their skills and capacities had increased Somalia’s relations with Kenya and 41% (155) believe that the available durable solutions had maintained Somalia’s relations with Kenya. The researcher concludes that over half of refugee population in Kenya is of Somali origin and that the diplomatic relationship between Kenya and Somalia places a priority on traditional diplomacy and conflict resolution. In addition, there is a clear linkage between presence of refugees and diplomatic relations between Kenya and Somalia. It is the opinion of the researcher that Kenya considers other avenues of dispute resolutions including possibly using sports as a diplomatic tool to bolster peace among the warring communities in the border or even joint livelihood projects and opportunities. Also, the researcher opines that the two countries should try the available diplomatic means which are better off than legal options since diplomacy allows for the termination of disputes upon voluntary acceptance by both teams.

Abstract: The study aims at determining the competitive strategies employed and performance of Unilever Tea Kenya Limited (UTKL). Competitive strategies encompass the overall organizational moves and approaches, which a firm possesses and is undertaking as a means of attracting buyers while withstanding competitive pressure and improving its market position. The environment of the tea industry in Kenya is characterized by intense competition with a great number of industry players all competing for the same customers. The high number of industry players has resulted in shrinking and fragmentation of market share for all the companies and in order to guarantee their continued survival and relevance in the current market, companies, including Unilever Tea Kenya Ltd, have had to adopt competitive strategies to ensure that they protect and grow their market share, thereby improving their performance. Specifically, this study set out to establish the competitive strategies adopted by UTKL; the effect of these competitive strategies on the overall company performance of UTKL and; to identify challenges that face strategy implementation in the company. The most suitable study design adopted was a case study design where by the unit of study was the company Unilever Tea Kenya Limited. Primary data was collected through an interview whereby 5 top managers at the company were targeted. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. This study shows that Unilever Tea Kenya Limited has adopted a mix of strategies that ranges from Porter’s generic strategies, Ansoff’s strategy and grand strategies. It is apparent that the strategies UTKL has adopted have helped the company to deliver a significant positive shift in performance of the company despite the turbulent times. This included more volumes, higher quality of tea, lowering of customer complaints, and timely delivery of orders and lower costs of production. Although the degree of success associated with the strategies was not studied, it is recommended that this area needs to be investigated further. It was recommended that there is need to study the implications of the increasing competition drawn from other factory agglomerations that serve the small scale farmers. UTKL should put more efforts and focus on sensitizing its employees on the importance of competitive strategy which assists in gaining competitive advantage and impact positively on the business performance.

Abstract: The financial management practices of financial institutions are of great concern to the financial regulators globally. The financial management practices on the credit union industry and its influence financial stability minimize loan default and achieving of better financial performance of the industry. In Kenya, Deposit Taking SACCOs (DTS) institute financial management practices such as working capital management and cash budgeting in an effort to improve financial performance. Despite the increase in adoption of DTS’s financial management practices, its impact on financial performance has not been sufficiently established. This study, therefore, sought out to examine the effect of financial management practices on financial performance of DTS in Kenya. The objective of the study was to determine effect of financial management practices on financial performance of DTS in Nairobi County, Kenya. Descriptive research design was deemed appropriate for this study as it will assist in understanding the effect of effects of financial management practices on financial performance in DTS in Kenya and therefore answer the “How” question of the study. The study population consisted of all 175 DTS registered under the SACCO societies Act in Nairobi County, Kenya. By using Yamane’s formula, the sample size will be 122 DTS. The study adopted simple random sampling technique where all units from the sampling frame will have an equal chance to be drawn and to occur in the sample. Questionnaires was used to obtain important information about the population. Descriptive analysis which included percentages, frequencies, means and standard deviation was done to establish the extent to which financial management practices influence financial performance in DTS in Kenya. Inferential data analysis techniques of correlation and regression analysis was used to establish the relationship between financial management practices and financial performance of DTS. The study found that overall 59.6% of the variation in Financial performance of Deposit Taking Saccos in Nairobi County, Kenya can be explained by for working capital management, Capital structure decisions, Liquidity management, financial investment management while the remaining percentage can be explained by other factors excluded in the model. The findings of the study demonstrated that Financial Management Practices significant influence on Financial performance of Deposit Taking Saccos in Nairobi County, Kenya.

Abstract: In recent decades, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has drawn much research interests. While some researches have looked into how CSR initiatives affect business competitive advantage (CA), the results have been conflicting thus far. Moreover, the role of benchmarking, diversity support ratio, and satisfaction ratio on the relationship between CSR and CA has not been specifically and explicitly studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate how benchmarking, diversity support and satisfaction ratios affect the relationship between CSR and CA. The study adopted a descriptive design with a target population of 250 employees, comprising of managers, cluster managers and departmental heads from Safaricom Company Limited. The study employed the use of a questionnaire with a Likert type questions to gather primary data from the respondents. The questionnaires were administered through a drop and pick method. A pilot test was conducted prior to the main study, to test the reliability and validity of the research instrument and the results used to modify the questions to remove ambiguity, lack of clarity and test reliability. Data collected from the study was thereafter analyzed using statistical package for social sciences software and presented in tables, graphs and charts. Findings from the study showed that benchmarking had a statistical significant effect on competitive advantage of Safaricom Company, hence a unit increase in benchmarking would considerable lead to an increase in competitive advantage by 0.094 units. Consequently, the study also found that diversity supportive ratio had a statistical significant effect on competitive advantage of Safaricom. This therefore meant that a unit increase in diversity support ratio, would lead to an improvement of competitive advantage of Safaricom Company by 0.062 units. There was also a statistical significant effect of satisfaction ratio on competitive advantage of Safaricom Company, indicating that with a unit increase in satisfaction ratio, there would be a significant decrease in competitive advantage of Safaricom Company by 0.137 units. The study recommended that companies should embrace benchmarking because it provides platform through which companies can make improvements in their performance by learning from their competitors and other industry players. The study also found a need for companies to emphasize on employee diversity to improve on the overall company image on the market and to able to attract more customers to the firm’s product and services. Finally, the study recommended that companies in general should strive to build their corporate reputation through corporate initiatives to attract best pool of talents that will steer the company towards achieving a competitive edge among other rivals in the industry. The study suggests that further researches may be performed on the sustainability of corporate responsibility due to its resource intensive nature, to enable companies cushion themselves from this without eroding on their gains

Abstract: The study sought to determine the influence of strategic management capabilities on the performance of commercial banks in the Nairobi County. The specific objectives of the study involved; to establish the influence of management capability on performance of commercial banks in Nairobi county; the influence of marketing capability, financial capability on performance of commercial banks in Nairobi county; and finally to determine the influence of technological capability on performance of commercial banks in Nairobi count. The study deployed descriptive research design. The study was anchored on three theories; Resource Based View Theory, Competitive Advantage Theory and Dynamic Capabilities Theory. From a total population of 42 commercial banks with 902 line managers in the head offices that is middle and senior level, A sample of 270 respondents was used. The data was analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics such as tables, Pearson’s correlation and regression were used in analyzing the data. The study found out that appropriate application of each of the four strategic management capabilities positively and significantly influence the performance of commercial banks in Kenya. Of the four strategic organizational capabilities, it was established that managerial capability has a weak negative relationship with the performance of commercial banks. The findings indicated that the collaborative decision making process is very important in the bank performances as well as nurturing creativity and innovation among employees. It was also apparent that the various banks use different strategies in the evaluation of the level of achievement of the set targets. In addition, it was clear that, marketing research played a big role in banks performance as the banks were able to introduce products that met customer’s needs. The key aspects of banks financial capability was proper cash management which ensured continued business with minimal interruptions and timely payment of bills. The study found out that technological capability as a strategy to reach unbanked and to ease banking queues which in turn increased sales. Effective strategic management capabilities have direct influence on the performance of commercial banks. The study recommended that commercial banks should continuously engage in updating their systems to remain relevant in the market engage in creating visions and missions statements that spell their strategic focus in the future. The study also recommended that commercial banks should have market policy framework which sensitive to the action of rival banks and activities in the financial market plan on effective performance strategies to evaluate the achievement of performance targets. From the findings, the study concluded that appropriate application of strategic organizational capabilities and accurate response to market dynamics enhances the performance of commercial banks in Kenya.

Abstract: Incentives play a significant role in ensuring the implementation of organizational strategies are successfully achieved. The success in the strategy implementation depicts the organization’s resolve to steer it towards the realization and achievement of its strategic goals. This study seeks to examine the influence of incentives on strategy implementation at the National Housing Corporation of Kenya. This study was guided by three specific objectives i.e. to determine the influence of job security, employee participation and career advancement on strategy implementation at the National Housing Corporation. The study used Expectancy theory of motivation and Kurt Lewis change implementation theory to unravel the underlying theoretical connection between the variables of the study. The adopted a descriptive design and targeted 76 management employees from the National Housing Corporation. The study employed a questionnaire as a tool that helped in gathering primary information from the respondents of the study. A small scale pilot study was performed to establish the reliability and validity of the research tool and the results were used in making the necessary adjustments to the tool in order to facilitate collection of reliable data for the study. Data analysis was performed through the use of statistical packages for social sciences and then presented in tables, charts and graphs. Results showed that job security, employee participation, and career advancement significantly influenced strategy implementation at the National Housing Corporation. The study recommended that organizations should offer employees consistent opportunities for growth, foster good relations and create joint management councils, formulate clear organization policies, offer leadership roles and adequately allocate sufficient resources towards strategic implementation organization projects and other strategic plans.  The researcher suggested that further studies should be done other incentives that were not covered in the study, plus other sectors apart from the corporations.

Abstract: Effective implementation of projects is not an easy task however there is a clear way to measure both the success and failure of a project and that is when it delivers on all agreed project objectives, be it scope, schedule, budget, quality or outcomes like goals to be achieved or strategic positions to be achieved. The purpose of the study was to examine the Determinants of Effective implementation of Public Health Construction projects in Nyamira County by focusing on four specific objectives: project leadership, budget allocation, project team competency and monitoring and evaluation. The study was guided specifically by the following four theories: the theory of budgeting, contingency theory, control theory and project management competency theory. The study used descriptive research design and the focus was on the 46 Public Health Construction projects within the 133 public Health facilities in Nyamira County. The unit of observation was Project managers, assistant project managers and the project supervisors of the 46 Public Health Construction Projects and the unit of analysis were the 46 public health construction projects in Nyamira County. The study adopted a census survey design with the respect of the unit of analysis which was the 46 Public Health Construction Projects in Nyamira County. A census was conducted since only 46 projects were studied and a census is applicable when the entire population is small.  Data was collected through the use of semi structured questionnaires which were administered to the project manager’s, assistant project managers and project supervisors who oversaw the activities of the 46 Public health Construction Projects. A pilot study was conducted to pretest the validity and reliability of data collection instruments.  After data, had be collected it was prepared in readiness for analysis by editing, handling blank responses, coding, categorizing and keying into statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) computer software for analysis.  SPSS software version 21.0 was used to produce frequencies, descriptive and inferential statistics were used to derive conclusions and generalizations regarding the population. A multiple regression model was used to show the relationship between the independent variables to the dependent variable. Data was presented using pie charts and tables to make it reader friendly. The study found that project leadership, budget allocation, project team competence and project monitoring and evaluation had a positive and significant effect on the effective implementation of Public Health Construction projects in Nyamira County. The study recommends that best tools for monitoring projects be identified, the monitoring process should also be improved from the current annual case and more so the reports are prepared after every monitoring and evaluation process. The project leaders and project teams should be competent and funds delays should be minimized at all costs to enhance effective implementation of Public Health Construction Projects.

Abstract: The study investigated on the influence of social networking services on social commerce most especially during the wide spread of the virus; Covid-19. Social media was globally in tune with the house lockdown as the pandemic kept spreading to more countries. The Pandemic made 5 billion people all around the world to stay indoors, living within the radius and diameter of their own houses, thus some of our daily needs and usage for domestic purposes were all made possible by the use of the internet. People either living with loved ones and family or some who did refrain themselves while they isolated. Isolating yourself from your immediate environment meant you receiving medical care from doctors who are also ensured to be well protected by wearing gloves and protective nose masks. The research thus, investigated on the buying and selling of various products and commodities on the cyber space. Rightly with the use of social networking services in social commerce and its usage most especially during the breakout of the covid-19 virus. This assertation requires empirical investigation. The study used the design of survey research type where students of the prestigious university of Ibadan, Nigeria were used as data. In this study, research questions were raised and answered in this study. The interference that can be drawn from the research is that the social networking services greatly enhances social commerce growth. Conclusion can be made that during the covid-19 pandemic, there was no decline in the social commerce of the nation as the tools of social networking services were fully in usage in every nook and cranny of the world. Where buyers met sellers and made sure items were delivered to each and every of their individual locations.

Abstract: Students are encouraged to interact with the subject matter of the class through activities such as discussions, problem-solving, role playing, and case studies, amongst other more hands-on approaches. When compared to passive methods such as lectures and seminars, this method requires a higher level of participation on the part of the learner. It requires student participation that entails meaningful engagement with the material, both on the level of an individual student and on the level of the classroom as a whole. The study aimed to find out the effectiveness of the direct purposeful experiences in the level of language skills of grade 6, Balic-Balic Elementary Schools, S.Y. 2018-2019. Descriptive method was used for quantitative research. Results showed that the level of language skills in terms of grammar in the pre-test is developing. Based on the summary of investigations conducted, it has been conclude that: The level of language skills of the Grade 6 pupil in English in pre-test is improving in terms of grammar and post-test after direct application of direct purposeful experience is Approaching Proficiency.
