Modernizing Middleware Platforms: Strategies, Challenges and Opportunities

Afnan Alawami

Abstract: Middleware platforms are key components that bridge the gap between heterogenous information systems and enable the flow of real time data between applications within and across organizations in order to achieve seamless and efficient business processes and data integrity. In the modern IT world, enterprises are adapting to digital transformation, and they are moving away from traditional on-promise services to cloud based services allowing them to outsource IT infrastructure, software and platforms via the Internet. This shift in businesses today results in an increasing demand to modernize middleware platforms, especially knowing that on-promise middleware platforms are not designed to address the need of such hybrid IT environments. In this paper, we provide a review of middleware modernization approaches and address the challenges and future opportunities of modernizing middleware platforms.

Keywords: Cloud Computing, Middleware, Integration platform as a service (IPaaS).
