Abstract: The traditional courtyard (ḥawsh) was a fundamental element in Kuwaiti and Arab architecture, providing social, climatic, and privacy benefits. However, rapid urbanization, economic factors, and social changes led to its disappearance from contemporary homes. This paper explores the reasons behind this shift, comparing Kuwait’s experience with other Gulf nations. The study highlights urban planning policies, rising land costs, and evolving lifestyles as key factors. It also discusses the potential revival of the courtyard in modern architecture through sustainable design, energy efficiency, and enhanced privacy. Lessons from regional and global case studies suggest that integrating courtyards into contemporary housing can promote cultural identity, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion.

الملخص: يشكّل الحوش التقليدي عنصراً جوهرياً في العمارة الكويتية والعربية، موفراً مزايا اجتماعية ومناخية وخصوصية. لكن التحضر السريع والعوامل الاقتصادية والتغيرات الاجتماعية أدت إلى اختفائه من المنازل الحديثة. تستعرض هذه الدراسة أسباب هذا التحوّل، مع مقارنة التجربة الكويتية بدول الخليج. كما تناقش إمكانيات إعادة إحياء الحوش عبر التصميم المستدام، وتحسين كفاءة الطاقة، وتعزيز الخصوصية. وتظهر دراسات إقليمية وعالمية أن دمج الأفنية في العمارة المعاصرة يمكن أن يعزز الهوية الثقافية والاستدامة البيئية والتماسك الاجتماعي.
